Many of you may alwready know but I read a few post that prompted me to post this! Be careful when o/cing with the STOCK HS (heatsink) and FAN! I don't know of a AMD stock HS & FAN that is any good for ANY O/cing! Some of the newer Intel stock HS & FANS are ok for a good o/c but check first!
Before doing ANY o/cing make sure you can read your CPU & CASE temperatures BEFORE you o/c and keep reading them as you o/c! You can use just the FSB for a good o/c! Getting into multiplyers too most likely will have you changing volts too if your trying for a BIG o/c! And you should learn more about that before you try it!
I like to use (AS) Artic Silver Crematic between the HS and FAN because its easy to apply! Remember you cannot get a good o/c with the PAD that comes with a new HS because it will NOT keep your CPU cool enough for a good o/c! Using (AS) Crematic OR (AS) 111 means that you CPU will run cooler BUT you will have to clean and reapply it every 5-6 months too! Your temps will show you when its time to reapply! But it is a MUST when o/cing! As far as temps check out whats the highest your CPU temps should be for a T-Bird, Duron, Athlon, P-3, P-4 or Celeron!
Remember that 40 mm fans are LOUD! 80mm's are MUCH quieter and 100mm & 120mm are the quietest. So plan on getting a HS that the higher MMer fans will fit. It will tell you on the HS or your suplier will tell you what size fans will fit on the HS.
Same goes for CASE fan loudness! You need a good ballance of IN & OUT case fans too!
If you cannot read your temps try installing www.motherboardmonitor.com and get your readings from that!
O/cing can damage your components so make sure you learn about o/cing FIRST!
Some Mobos like INTEL AND others, will NOT let you o/c by the FSB (front side bus) OR Multiplyers! Other Mobos let you mildly o/c and others let you MAX out an o/c! Some mobos hace a PCI & AGP lock that keeps them in sync as you o/c. Some don't! You could do a LOT of damage to your AGP video card or whatever is in your PCI slots if you DO NOT keep these in SYNC!
Most guys that o/c BIGTIME only do it for a reading (BRAGING RIGHTS) LOL! Then most will drop them back to a reasonable o/c when using their rigs!
Theres a lot MORE to o/cing too! EX: If you o/c to high you could blow out your HD (hard drive), Video card ETC! Any o/cing should be done with the BEST of ALL components! Your PSU will limit your o/c too! A quality PSU like ANTEC or ENERMAX should be used! They have different models too! Get their BEST! This does NOT mean their HIGHEST rated PSU, but their best model!
I would not attempt ANY o/cing without at least a "QUALITY" 380 - 400 WATT MINIMUM PSU! Some of the newer video cards need a MINIMUM of 350 WATTs or more to funtion properly! The manufactures web site, your supplier or on the box will have the MINIMUM required watts listed for you for each video card!
Another VERY important thing is your MEMORY! Some will NOT let you o/c at all! Some will let you o/c to the max!
Its late, i'm tired but I hope this makes you understand o/cing a little more! Theres a lot more I could tell you but I hope this is enough to make you understand that you just don't go uping the FSB with out knowing something about it first!
BUT ITs FUN and ADDICTIVE!!!:D
BTW: When you finally learn how to o/c your CPU then you can learn how to o/c your Video Card! ;)
I'm getting too old for all this o/cing $%#$&! But once it gets in your blood, its too late! Your hooked for life!!!
And building a new rig is much easier than you think! Once you build then you can also repair or just have fun upgrading your rig when ever you want to.
Rule of thumb! Learn to build first THEN learn to o/c so if you burn anything out someone won't be telling you "That will cost you $500.00 to repair the damage you did"!
Old Mechanic!!!

Very true.
I believe the intel stock processor, the one that comes with retail, is a very nice cooling solution for mild overclocking.
The stock fan for AMDs... I don't think they're good enough for running it at stock speeds.

A lot of people will agree with you on that! Altho AMD always had lower prices so this may have something to do with the cheaper HSs & fans! Then again their new top of the line CPUs are PRICY too! Maybe they spent the extra $5.00 for a better HS & FAN on them!
