Just bought a 98, now fixing it up

Like all the work, and love these threads about keeping these rigs on the road - - but personally would not have let this one go. . .

. . . even if you enjoy destroying ants. Biased to 1st Gens, so the one you kept must be mint!

Paul
Yes well it was and is hard to let it go. It looks nicer than it ran. It has 308,000 miles and it was starting to run like a 30 year old vehicle with 300k. But keeping my other 94 has helped not miss it as bad. This one has only 130,000 and runs like a top! Personally I thought the green one looked better but the red one is in better shape mechanically.

I will crush two just to save one if needed

1994 was a long time ago. These trucks are tanks!

@Running an Explorer More likely just that I haven't seen any gold with the pin stripe. There's plenty of gold ones around my area (including a lifted one on what appears to be 35's) but none of them have the pin stripe.

The guard rail stripe... nobody needs to worry about that.

Oh ok
Yeah, haha!

Most 96-01 gold trucks I have Owned have a blue or brown pin stripe I think it was factory

prety sure they were, ive seen enough of the champagne color ones with the brown stripe to think it must be factory

I got the new Timken hubs on the other day, now it's alot quieter, old ones were roaring.

Today I changed the transmission fluid, and boy was it dark. I exchanged all the fluid by pumping it out the cooler line with the vehicle running and pouring new fluid in at the same time. Supposedly according to all the old paperwork, the trans fluid was last changed at around 30,000 miles, but with the little plastic plug still being in the pan, I doubt even that.
I also changed the transfer case fluid and the fluid was terrible... I have no record of it ever being changed.

That is not good trans fluid should never be that black!

Well done!

I would run it for 500-1000
Miles and drop the pan change filter and 5 quarts

T case same thing run it and then change again in a while. This way you are getting the rest of that burnt stuff out

While your trans is still alive you should consider additional cooling, that fluid has been cooked. Make sure you have dual core radiator and aux trans cooler. I like to add a second factory aux trans cooler, a magnetic inline filter, and bypass the factory radiator trans cooler.

Here's how I changed the trans fluid.
Dropped the pan and drained 4 qts and changed filter. Then put pan back on, then put 8 qts back in. Then hooked Drain hose to cooler line then pumped out 4qts, then cut off truck then put 4 more qts in then pumped out 4. Repeated that process multiple times until fluid looked nice and red again.
So I wouldn't think changing the filter would be needed again?
I probably will drain the transfer case again in the near future.
I think I do have a dual radiator, maybe. It's nice and fat. I'll look into an extra cooler and stuff.

You should still run it 500-1000 miles and change the filter again because anything you dislodged during the flush will now be picked up resulting in a dirty filter in just 500 miles

Fluid and filter change is cheap insurance
Transmission rebuild is $2000+

Ok, will do.
Yes definitely!

Well I finally got a chance to change the front and rear diff fluids the other day. I didn't have a good pump to extract the fluid from the front diff so I got a random hose I had in the garage and stuck it in the diff hole and sucked it (with my mouth) and let it siphon out into the pan. BTW FWI diff fluid tastes like it smells...
I was able to drain all but half a quart out this way, but the fluid already looked pretty good so I'm not too worried about that.

Next items on the list to do is the fuel filter and sway bar links.
