Okay so I bought this 91 explorer, i have a few questions
so im not sure if the 4x4 works, is there any sure way to tell until its too late and im spinning on ice? is there anyway to narrow it down?
theres this thing on the console thats broken off, its by the back of the console, it sticks out and i dunno wtf is is.

and can you switch to manual lock hubs with no problems?

and this vacuum tube fell off im assuming and i dont know where it is, it ran fine, and then i started it one time and it reved up and then died, start it again, does the same thing, so has anyone had this problem?

and last, i go to start it and it clicks like the battery is dead but you try starting it again and it starts, im assuming its some sort of solenoid, anyone know what this problem would be?

thanks everyone.

Im no expert at this at all, but check the 4x4 troubleshooting thread alot of helpful info. About the manual hubs, I got a pair that I yet to put on. There are like 4 pieces total counting the hubs that goes on after taking the auto's off, along with the nuts.. There is a write up about the swap with more indepth detail an info.. The swap seems pretty straight forward an not hard at all.

When you try an start it hit the gas pedal an some to see if it stays running after that.. Mine Just started acting up today after taking it to a lube depot. Once he told me to start it after the oil change it would not staying running on its own so I think he knocked off a vacuum line also but who knows lol... But yea try give it some gas an see if that makes it stay running...

that does make it run but when i let off it stalls.
might just be a vacuum hose. it did that last night too but i couldnt even see anything. i hope it isnt a big problem.
i checked that 4x4 troubleshooting but im not sure where to even begin. i dont hear anything lock wehn i put 4x4 on and reverse, nothing locks, nothing spins so i dunno.

also, i found out that broken thing is the console bracket, what is this for?

can anyone help? i gotta insure this thing on monday and i kinda want to get everything fixed before it snows.

Your in the same boat as I am .. lol it sucks but gotta love it... But do you hear any clicking in the rear driver wheel well when you hit the 4x4 button? Have you tried the 4x4 module test on the 4x4 computer? Say more than likely its the shift motor, there known for the lil stop bumper breaking an causing problems... If you do a search on the 4x4 module you will find out how to test it.... All you do is disconnect the battery, open up the accsess hole on the driver side in the trunk area, pull the two left plugs on the black box there.. Connect the battery an on the box there is a little white button push it up(it won't push in far) next to it is a red light.. They say after pushing it an if it blinks 4-5 times an stops its good if it doesn't do anything or keeps flashing its bad.. Might just be best to do a quick search so you can read what more experienced people had to say about it.. Also the shift motor is not hard to fix at all... Best of luck to ya man!

i hear a clicking when i press it. the light goes on the dash as well. it clicks like 4 or 5 times. i dunno what that means

welcome

Check the vacuum tree on the drivers side by the firewall for an open leak. This may be your ideling problem. Also, check all your battery connections and cables for signs of corresion. Many times the cables will corrode from the inside out. As for the 4x4, I suggest getting on a dirt/gravel road and test it.

when ur hear the clicking sound that mean ur locking in 4 wheel drive. my 91 does it all the time when i use it.ur vucuum hose must come of the vucuum tree cause mine was doing the same thing the other. i put the hose back on and its running like new again:D

yeah i did that to the hoses, one or two were off haha, it runs fine now. well aside from a lifter noise but the guy said it had been sitting for a while so i hope an oil change and some additive will clear up what i hope to be a sticky lifter.
how do i know its engaging though? and cant you press the 4x4 on the fly, wheenver youre driving, or do you have to do the neutral, 4x4 button, reverse for a bit, and then go. or is that just for 4x4 lo?

Beware though as well, on the vacuum tree some of them are simply capped off, not all of them have hoses running off. You should have a sticker under your hood that describes where the vacuum system is connected to, I want to say I know it's connected to the airbox, cruise control, brake booster, and something else that's fuel related... Just reach around there, and see if you can feel an open hole, if you do, what I did was cut I went to the store, bought a short 2-3 inch piece of tubing and a clamp, clamp teh tubing on the vacuum tree, and then stick a bolt in the other end.

As for the clicking, I have no idea about 4x4, but if it's "clicking" when you go to START the vehicle, there are a few problems that can cause this. The most common is you probably have corroded battery cables, happen to everyone eventually. Check the cables going from the battery to starter solenoid (on firewall to left of battery in front of fuse box), and from starter solenoid to starter. Most likely one of those cables is corroded and not letting juice get down to the starter. You can replace this pretty easily. Another problem might be is not ENOUGH power is getting through, try cleaning your battery terminals. They make little tools with brushes on the inside that clean the battery terminal, and also the terminal on the cable. It's a 3 dollar tool, and I think everyone should have one.

Hope that helps.

would it not be the starter solenoid? or would that cause something else, or it to not start at all?
cause its just random, it clicks and does nothinglike the battery is dead but if i keep trying it, it starts fine, its just random

also, what the **** is the console bracket for?
