I just had my Magnaflow replaced with the Flowmaster 50 series. I love it! The magnaflow had a nice tone on the outside at low rpm's, but inside sounded like rice and really loud. It was just about as loud on the inside as it was outside. I love the Flowmaster. It also has a deep tone, and maybe slightly louder outside. But inside it is MUCH quieter than the magnaflow. Also, the magnaflow changed tone with rpm's. At low rpm's it was nice and rumbly, but at higher rpm's it would kind of go on mute, almost like stock. The Flowmaster has an even tone throughout the rpm range.

glad you are happy with the muffler i was hoping to get one this summer but i had to go to school (not summer school, college) what engine do you have and are you happy with the sound or would you like it louder

I have the sohc. I love the sound. It's perfect. It sounds a lot less like a V6 than the magnaflow. It is also slightly deeper and louder (on the outside). On the inside, with the windows up, it is only a little bit louder than stock. That delta flow technology really works. On the outside, it has a nice rumble, loud enough to be noticed when you get on it, but not so loud it sets off car alarms. If you want medium-loud with minimal interior noise, get the 50-series delta. If you want really loud with some interior noise get the 40-series. I think the 40-series non-delta is even louder than the delta on the inside.

i was thinking about getting a magnaflow but when i saw how much trouble you were having i was convinced it was not for me thank you for posting the trouble with the maganflow the last thing i want to do is sound like a ricer

Well, I may have exaggerated a bit (but not much). The magnaflow does have a higher pitch. It really only sounds ricey on the inside (I found that out later, but how often do you hear your own car at a distance?). It also only sounds good at idle, and maybe up to 1500 rpm's, but past that, the tone gets higher and higher pitched until it almost goes mute at high rpm's. Anyway, I'm just repeating what I've already said. Basically, IMO Flowmasters are awesome. I don't mean to say magnaflows aren't any good, but they are definitely not for the 6-cyl. I think they might sound decent on an 8. And if I was into rice, that's what I'd put on my Civic.

Hey Gonzo, did you leave the resonator on past the muffler? And what diameter pipe are you running? And call me crazy, but I think my Magnaflow has gotten quiter.... Weather does wierd things to the sound of the muffler, but I've definately looked at the Delta 50 and wondered if I should've gotten it. Did you get a dual input pipe or did you have the shop weld on a Y Pipe?

Hi HokieBert, I was just about to tell metstalker to ask you about your magnaflow. I had the resonator removed completely. I'm running 2.5" pipe. I had the shop weld up a y-pipe, and used the single in, single out muffler. I believe it's much cheaper that way. Do you have the sohc? Does your magnaflow sound similar to my description? When I had it on, I noticed a lot of water coming out of the tailpipe. Does yours do the same?

I have to agree that the flowmaster 50 is the perfect muffler for the SOHC. I love mine. I've got some sound clips of it around here somewhere......

How much are ya'll paying for these 50 series mufflers?

you can probably find one for less than 100 bucks. then you just need to install it and pay for a tail pipe unless you do it yourself and reuse your stock pipe.

I think mine was 120 installed. The 50 series cost more than the 40 series.

Do you think these results would be similar with the OHV engine? That's what I'm running, and was thinking of getting the magnaflow until I saw this post. Just wondering what kind of differences there would be between the SOHC and OHV.

i'm looking for a lot of rumble. do you think the flowmaster 40 non-delta will be just as nice as the 50 for the SOHC, or do you think its overkill and will start to sound bad?

doesn't the 50 series come with a dual in? why did you go with a y-pipe instead?

the biggest problem is, is that the 40 only comes with single in. but i really want to do all the work myself. im working on a really trick setup and ill be using flexible pipe from jcwhitney just to get everything working perfect and sounding perfect so i dont drop a million bucks at an exhaust shop. after that, i might have a shop professionally weld everything and bend some good pipes.

but as far as y-pipes and single ins, does anyone have any tips on doing this myself? ill buy a welder if i have to.

I think flowmaster 40's sound better on OHV's. Give me your email and I'll send you a clip of my friends OHV with a Flowmaster 40 and duals.

Can someone tell me the Part # of the 50 series muffler for the explorer because there are a lot of numbers and sizes, and are you running the Delta 50 series SUV? or the normal Delta 50 series?

also, i cant seem to find it anywhere, does anyone know the stock pipe diameters???

So, is the consensus here that the 40 or 50 both sound good only the 40 is louder? I'm looking for a good mustang-type rumble, not annoying loud. Something thats says good non-stock exhaust on that puppy! I am going the 2.5 mandrel bent rout with a flowmaster from a custom shop.

98FordX24 -- That'd be great, thanks a lot. I'm at jakegl@yahoo.com

Another question: I just ordered the KKM Induction Kit - I was reading on another post that the Magnaflow and KKM were a perfect combo, but I assume the Flowmaster would be just as good as far as performance?

Just for posterity's sake, I would encourage you all to get the QUIETEST exhaust you can live with that gets you the performance gains you want. Don't get me wrong, I have a 92 ex and just put a straight through magnaflow on with 2.5" piping all the way back. The performance gains were definately noticable (I have some intake mods as well), however the sounds isn't outragous which is what i wanted. Upgrading your exhaust just to be LOUD is a poor choice in my opinion and will probobly get your truck keyed. I've had two nieghbors who put on basically no exhaust just to be loud and have had their windows smashed. As much as I oppose that, I don't really feel bad for them. Upgrade your exhaust for performance not sound, lest you become "that guy" who has 35 12" subs in his trunk that are so loud he wears ear plugs in his car and it rattles yours next to it at a stop light.

food for thought

I agree with dnellans. Hence my question about a good sounding(not stock) but not annoying exhaust.
