 Will a 1991 4x4 with a 5 speed trany and a 4.0 and auto hubs work in four wheel drive with only one hub on?? Wouldn't that be a 4x3 lol

Yes but there when you dig deeper and get in serious stuff, there isnt really such a thing as a stock 4wd Explorer because the differential allows at least one tire to slip. So in stock configuration and "open" differentials, the most we'd have is a "2 wd". With a limited slip, that might increase to a "2.5 wd" because the limited slip unit will slip after a certain torque difference between the two axle shafts. With a positively locking locker instead of a limited slip in the rear axle, then you have a "3 wd" and with another positive locking locker in the front, then you'd have a true "4 wd".

With auto hubs there is no way of locking just 1 hub. If you had manuals then you could lock just one, but as IZ said, that would only cause the axle shaft that isn't hooked up to spin, unless you have a front locker.
If you have manual hubs and a front locker you can do this. But only for emergencies. I had to do it once to get home after throwing a rear drive shaft, because with a front locker you can't run both hubs locked on pavement. Talk about torque steer!!!!!

Ya, that thing had to pull like a b*t*h!
