keyless entry HELP plz

OK, I want to install a stock keyless entry system. I'm gonna goto the junk yard and see if they have an X i can pull all that junk from. What do I need to get? computer module? keypad on door (how do i get that off)? then i'll get the remotes off of ebay.

is it a lot of wiring? i ordered a CD off of ebay that better come in a couple days, so that should help with wiring.

you would need a lot of stuff. Not sure about the wiring but that might need to be modified too. To start off you'd need transmitters, GEM, and a RAP module, door lock cylinder sensors if you were going anti-theft. Not sure on your 1998 as that may be different then a 1996. HTH.

Just a thought but it might be cheaper and less of a headache to just go by a keyless entry system from somewhere. I think you can get really cheap ones starting like at $50 and they go up from there.

Keep in mind the cheaper ones have less distance with the remote but probably the same as a factory one. I got a keyless entry/starter system for $200 installed and it works from at least 1600 feet away no problem.

Thanks guys...i was looking on eBay and i see those alarm/starter/remote entry kits for a little over $100, and it has a lcd pager and all.....i dont want all that (hella lot of wiring) all i want is unlock and lock and panic.

i'll email Torie and see what that kit is about.

I know Bulldog sells these like at Wal-Mart for only like $50 at the most. It is just unlock/lock and it is suppose to be pretty easy to install yourself. I would think it would be just like installing one from Ford??

simple mod....just get the RAP module from any year between 98-01 cuz any of those will work with your year cuz the modules are similar and uses the same remote...cut the wires, leave about 5 inches or so, just enough room to where you can put connectors on to run your own wires...then grab the keypads, take off the door panel and there is a metal clip in the inside holding the keypad in place so you cant take it off from the outside. cut the wires, remove the clip and then you can pull it out from the outside. thats it...
but since you have sport...the GEM module might be different...the GEM module is located behind the stereo on the left side...you will see a black box with 3-4 wire connector harnesses on it...look on yours and tell me how many connectors you have and where are they located...for instance, i have a 4 door 4x4... and it has 4 connectors, 3 on the side and 1 on the bottom...i think the sport is 2wd, right? cuz that box will also have the 4x4 option on it also...i dont think that it will matter...cuz this will be a keyless entry option. but i will get back to you and tell you what wires go to what...

OK, i have 4 connectors on the GEM module, 3 on the side (all three are right next to each other) and 1 on the bottom

so uhh, if the junkyards dont have a rap module from 98-01 then is there a place i can buy it online for a good price? i tried ebay and came up with no results

hmmm drilling holes in my doors is gonna be scary!!!!!!

edit: HOLY CRAP i found one on ebay for $10 buy it now from a 98 X!!!!

Get it...make sure it has the wire harness to it...
about the drillilng holes...yea, i was scared to do it too...so that's why im gonna have it professionally done...cuz i dont trust my drilling skills...hehehe

ok i have another question...on ebay they have remotes with and without the blue rear door button...they both say they are for the explorer, so would they both work? does the RAP have an option for the blue rear door button? also, will any remote work (i know u can program them)?

Run any wires under the door sills...they lift up.

the 3 button remote is the one you want to get cuz that works for 98-01 explorers...im not sure about the 4 button...i think that remote are for other years.

and i agree with crankcase...run the wires under the door sill...they just pop out...you should have alot of room in that door sill tunnel to do it, mine did...and if you have troulble getting them thru...just run a strong piece of wire thru the other side and tape it really strong to your wire bundle then pull on the wire to guide your wire bundle thru the tunnel...
