I recently bought a '97 XLT and the previous owner had lost the remote for the keyless entry.

If I go to the Ford dealership here, can they order (or sell one if they have it in stock) and program it for my Explorer?
Do they usually have them in stock, or will they have to order one?

They should be able to order you one. If it's anything like an aftermarket alarm, they just have to enter a "programming" mode on the alarm system, and "learn" the new remote onto the system. I don't imagine the remotes are really any different from Ford vehicle to Ford vehicle, so they might even have one in stock for you! Be prepared, as they will probably be quite expensive!

My '97 came with only 1 remote, and I purchased a second remote off ebay for less than $20 and it came with instructions on how to program it. Very easy to do. and a heck of a lot cheaper than a dealer would do it for.
