The situation - I have a 93 xplorer xlt that I drive from Idaho to Wyoming for work and I have definitely lost my keys. As it is, I can get a replacement from a dealer to open the door (not 100% sure, but sounds right - just still unaware of cost), but the ignition has been changed out so I need a different key to start it. If I can get it home, I can fix/replace it myself (with help) but my resources are limited where I'm at - any advice on how to go about getting it started?

I suggest calling a locksmith. He can definitely get the car unlocked and may be able to pick/jimmy the ignition switch. Once it's in the ON postion, it pretty easy to put a new one in.

yeah, I could, but that'll put me at least 100 into it and I'm a cheapskate :P

I did end up calling them, and learned that the 93 x have a sidebar system that makes it more than a little difficult to 'jimmy' into the on position (supposedly) but they would be able to drill out the cylinder for me so I can stick a new one in.

Been doing a little thinking, and I believe I can get into my explorer w/o the help of the locksmith - and my xplorer happens to be in my workplace parking lot which happens to have a shop for working on trucks (you know - the big ones that you always blow by on the freeway ;)) so i'm pretty sure I have access to drill depending on the willingness of the mechanics (or I could buy my own, something I need to do anyway) so I was wondering how difficult it would be to drill it out myself and what I would need to do.

Either way I'm out at least c-note, but my gives me a drill in the process - any advice and tips would be appreciated

note: to my 'disappointment' ford can't cut keys for vehicles older then 10 years old (currently anyways)
