(may be important info to y'all to diagnose)

Problem:: I have a knocking noise that i can hear when I break, not a continuous knock while braking, but one solid KNOCK. it is defintely coming from the front end somewhere, but I can't determine where. It also happens Every once-in-a-while when goin over a bump, but not every time.

Could you guys please try and help me diagnose this problem?

Thank you all in advance

I don't know much about 1st gens, but perhaps it could be the radius arm bushings.

or a u joint

it may be the rear u joint, and it could just sound like its in the front....

r/a is a possiblilty too ... the right side one is too close to the cat and it deteriorates quickly..... the poly ones are best for there... also ford and aftermarket also have some that are like fiberglass impregnated and this helps too

is there a way to check them? do I just try and move the RA where the bishing is and see if it moves??

look to see if it is still there and in good looking order...
by look you can normally tell if the r/a is bad....

not sure how to check the u joint, i know how to check it, by feel... but thats becuase i know what a bad one feels like....

doesn't a bad u-joint have a lot of play if its bad? like if you more the tire and there is a lot of movement. or am I thinking of something else?

moving the tire will move a u joint, but they arent that close together and there will be a lot of play....

the ujoint is on the driveshaft... thers a lot more parts before a tire.....

Could it be a bad motor or transmission mount?

-Jason

could be, but I hope it isn't.... I'm gonna go out today and check out the RA bushings, and Look at the u-joint (like that's gonna help) and see if there's anything visual. other than those two things, I have no clue what it could be.

A buddy of mine had an old Chevy Celebrity when we were younger and what you explained it the exact same symptoms he had with a broken transmission mount. About one second after med to hard braking you'd hear a single thud.

had a busy day, I'm triyn to get money together to afford my Rear Powertrax No-Slip, and didn't even get a chance to check it out......

I will defintely check out the tranny mounts though too. Thanks for the idea.

My $$$ is on the radius arm bushings.........

no, it wouldn't be a motor or a trans mount cuz the engine would shake horribly at idle. i have a 998 sport and it is making the same noise. it made the noise before i did any of the lifting. i am thinking it is the ball joints, i have had mine replaced once, or at least the dealership told me they did.

carfreak - did you ever solve this problem? My X just started making that same exact noise ever since i got back from a wheelin' trip. it freaks me out a little cause i don't know what to do or where to look unless i'm driving and braking. me and a friend of mine did a short visual check under the front end and didn't seem to find anything out of the ordinary. I know this is an old thread but wondering if you ever solved this problem and what was causing the knock sound.

thanks
