Lesser of 2 evils?

ok, I searched and searched here, other boards, web but I can't decide which is the lesser of the 2 evils:

Earl Scheib or Maaco?

I have the not so great peeling clear coat on my Blue 91 Sport roof, hood and slightly next to those areas. Just last week went to a shop local to me and got a quote for just under 2 grand to get it redone. Just a tad bit too much :) considering I would see how great those parts were I would be mad I did not get the whole truck done. So I asked about how much to do the whole truck he told me around 5500! Now this place seemed real good, 31 bays, BMWs and crap like that in there, real clean. but for 5500 I could find a newer X with liveable paint on it. He went on to say if I did the whole truck I would then just find other stuff I would be unhappy with like wanting all new trim and seals so everything looked new and it would not be worth it unless I was going to keep it 5 or more years.

So I come to the conclusion that I am not going to attempt this myself. mostly because I could not take the waiting game of prepping and crap myself. I would start prepping then take more short cuts than the worst shop and just spray the damn thing with super-bargain equiptment and paint with no experience I think I would be setting myself up for a huge letdown. Not to mention not really any great place to paint it with out making a booth in my garage. So now on to cheap alternatives where I can just give some dude with many cars painted worth of experience some money and get the thing to at least be a uniform color with out peeling clear coat for a couple years.

Earl Scheib or Maaco. Now going into this I know its not the best, well its a crap shoot because who knows you could get someone one that cares about the shop and does decent work with the low to mid quality stuff they provide or you can get some person that has painted tons of cars but he is in a contest with the others in the shop trying to see who can paint the most cars in a week :)

I know its not going to be show quality, not even close, but its a cheap 91 truck that is subject to sudden idiot abuse, like parking lot dings, wild shopping carts, etc. ya know the type just a normal truck wanting a bit of new paint.

so what do you think? sorry this was long winded but I could not stop going on and on once I started  :p

How about if you did all the prep work yourself (sanding etc.) and then took it to a shop to get painted. That would save a lot on labor and save you some serious cash that you could put torward a much better and more worth while paint job.

Earl Scheib In Dunbar WV painted our 68 Mustang Fastback about 8 or 9 years ago and did the worst job ever. They did nothing they were paid to do. They were paid to seal and prime the car which was not done because the paint pealed and cracked a month after painted, they were also supposed to clear coat it, but it wasn't clear coated and they didn't paint the door jambs as well. We paid an extra $400 bucks to have the jambs and top coat done. Worst money ever spent. The reason it was done there is it needed painted quick, but they had 2 weeks to do the job. It has since been repainted by my father and I and it looks a million times better!!! All it cost us to paint it was $350 for the paint and not the $1000 at Earl Scheib. My suggestion, find a reliable but cheap shop that you think you can trust. There is a guy across the river who I had paint the hood on my 99xlt that only charges 350 to paint.....sealer/base/clear a car if all he has to do is paint. And he does good work! Good luck!

Years ago my uncle had his old Ford pickup Earl Scheibed. That porch paint held up well, looked like hell, but held up well. I had Maaco do a Toyota Corolla I did a boatload of body work to. The guy asked how long you gonna keep it and I told him two years. He told me a two year paint job was $189.00. Just after the two year mark it started to peel and the car was sold. Perfect timing.

Look at the cars on their lot they had already done, see whose product is better.

Follow GaSouthern s advice. Detrim and prep as much as you can your self.

That is how they get by so cheaply, by insufficent prepping and detriming nothing
