My 06 XLT recently developed a rattle in the rear liftgate. Sounds like it may be coming from the passenger side and if I push against the liftgate it almost seems like it is not completely closing on that side. Has anyone else come across this or know why it might be doing this? I don't want to have to leave it at the dealership for a day if there is a quick fix.

Thanks

It comes from the tailgate rails , those plastic-parts you can see on the right and left side guiding the tailgate when you close it. If you send me an email i´ll look where i have the Ford-manual how to solve the prob, it´s only a little distancer needs to be mount on one of the rails, not a big deal.

Ya know, i HAD the rattle at first and now it's lon gone, no work done on it, and now glad too!

Does the Moonroof rattle when open on any of your trucks?

Thankfully no...

So I take my Ex back to the dealer I bought it at to have the rattle taken care of and the service tech has no idea what I'm talking about. He adjusted the wedges in the back and said "oh that should fix it".

Crizz was nice enough to send me the TSB for this issue so I knew what was wrong with it and tried explaining that to the tech, but he was still clueless. After I got fed up with his lack of knowledge I drove down the road to another dealer. Went in and talked to the service tech at this place and he entered a few things into the computer and viola...he gets the TSB.

My question is this. Shouldn't all service departments be able to find this TSB or is it just certain ones?

Needless to say my rattle is still not fixed and now I have to wait to get an appointment, :(

In my opinion, every servicetstation that carries the FORD - Logo and so called "Ford Service" should be able to find the TSB needed. Otherwise they should´t call themselves Ford specialists.

Have some Probs with "Ford Greenway", they don´t answer my emails about my tire probs. That is one of those j***´s only selling cars but not interested in customers satisfaction.

What the heck is a world-wide tire-warranty good for when the dealer doesn´t get in touch with the customer ??

yeah i have that same problem there is a TSB on that,I would like it if someone sent me that also???

I know what you mean. Is there any way to log a formal complaint with Ford itself instead of just the dealership? That really didn't get me anywhere.

Crizz where did you get the TSB so that I can take a look at it??

06 liftgate rattle

I too have the rattle in the liftgate\window area. I haven't taken it to the dealer yet. Please let me know the TSB number or name so I can go with the correct information. Thank you.

RATTLE—REAR LIFTGATE OVER BUMPS TSB 05-23-2
FORD: MERCURY2006 Explorer 2006 Mountaineer

ISSUE :
Some 2006 Explorer 4dr/Mountaineer vehicles built
prior to 9/16/2005 may exhibit a rattle noise from
the right rear liftgate while driving over bumps. This
may be due to a poor fit between the body wedge
plate assembly (78404C28) and the liftgate side
slider (78404C04).

ACTION :
If a customer comes in for this condition, verify if
the noise is coming from the right liftgate wedge
block area. If so, install two (2) pieces of Urethane
hard foam from the Rotunda Squeak And Rattle Kit
(164-R4900).

Good find!

well I don't know if it's the mechanics at the dealer or what but so far the trucks been back 3 times for the same rattle and after about 2 weeks or so it starts to rattle again.

Really startin to pi$$ me off! :fire:

I got it too! Its as annoying as f*** im always when hitting bumps im always looking over my shoulder trying to see where exactly its coming from...Thing is when i've inspected the lifttgate, the window, the struts, everything seems tight open and closed so where exactly is it coming from...pictures would be great

If the rails are okay and tight to the gate, check the lock. Just try to rattle at the closed gate at the lower edge. Maybe the lock needs to be readjusted only. That´s what I love at my 99 : one lock each side. Makes more sense than one in center of the gate.

I discovered that my rattle was from at least 2 sources. The inner plastic liner near the latch for the rear window, and the lower edge of the license plate. I placed some adhesive backed felt pads from Home Depot (used to pad furniture or cabinet doors) beneath both, and it seems to have quieted the rattle down. There is still some noise from somewhere else, but it is not as loud.

my rattle is coming from the rails on the passenger side just as described in the TSB. I am going to try a diferrent dealer this time and see what happens. If it comes back like it usually does then its time to give Ford a nasty gram.

New felt

I had a similar problem. I noticed the felt on the locking pin on the window was worn away. I replaced the felt with that green drawer felt and viola the rattle stopped. I suppose I will need a better piece of felt but so far it fixed the rattle.
