Lifts and max tire and wheel sizes for explorers
This is a quick reference guide I have put together based on information gathered from the Explorer Forum. Remember this is just a guide. You may have to do some fender trimming to fit these tires on your explorer. Others things can change what size tire you can run on your explorer. Like fiberglass fenders, rim width and rim backspacing.. I figured this would help some of you that were pondering what size lift to run what size tires. If anyone would like to add something go ahead and post it and I will add it to my list. If any of the moderators could make this a sticky that would be great. Hope this helps.

There's a 3" body lift. Performance accessories part 883. The spindle lift is for 2wd only. With the torsion twist and leaf spring shackles in the rear plus the body lift you could fit 33x12.50s.

i was really looking for a suspension lift. is there any kind of suspension lift? or is the body lift the only available for my year and make?

i'm sorry i don't mean to sound picky or anything i'm just looking more for a ground clearance than a tire clearance. although i'm not complaining because if there isn't a suspension lift i'm going with the the body lift. btw thanks 01STrunner. i was looking for a body lift today while at work and came up with zilch. although i figured you just used a ford ranger body lift for the explorer. lol.

with no lift i can run 31x10.50x15 on stock 15x7 rims without fender trimming & with a 1-2 inch suspension lift some fender trimming ? that doesnt make sense to me. i want to put a 3 inch block lift on my explorer & coil spring spacers on the front. the lift i bought used off of a 1990 jeep cherokee xj, can i put this on my '94 explorer & if so, what's the best way to do so ?

My 2000 came stock with 255/70 r16. Max size would be same?

I've done the TT & Shakles for maybe 1.5-2"
I'm looking with wide eyes at Super Swampers 33/12.5R16 :)
The 12.5 part is what I'm nerves about.
This pic is before I did the lift.

Also my brush guard should be in today :)

lift

I have a 2002 explorer xlt and I'm doing a lift with the rancho quicklift struts (1.5" front 1.25" rear) Now I looked at the chart and it doesn't give me much info for my explorer. What is the biggest size tires I can run on 15 inch rims that I will not have to do any trimming.

Trying to avoid making a new thread.... Search didn't provide any help :(

Does anyone know anything about fitment for 255/85/R16 (Actual 33.5-34" tall and 10" wide depending on manufacturer and vehicle weight)? I'm trying to maximize clearance and maintain fuel economy by going taller and skinnier. it would be on a 1997 AWD Mountaineer.

hey guys just wondering if what tire sizes I could run on my 2001 stock explorer sport, have the 16 inch wheels, just wondering 245/75/16 or 265/75/16???? with out a major mods????

Wheel Interchange Question

Hi all - I have a newbie question !! My question is, can I use my stock 15" wheels from my 2001 Explorer Sport on my new 2003 Mercury Mountaineer ? It came with 16" wheels originally. The 15" ones have my snow tires on them. Will I need to get some wheel spacers or will they just bolt on as-is ? Thanks !!

I have done enough suspension lift (TT for the front, shackles+AAL in back) to put all 4 wheel arches 34 inches off the ground with 235/75/15 tires (28.9 inches diameter, according to the calculator).

It looks like 31x10.50x15 will fit, but I'm wondering whether I should gamble on 32x11.50x15. It seems to be a question of how far the springs will compress. Tires are expensive so I don't want to have to re-buy.

I suppose at full compression without a body lift it's the same as if I had not done a suspension lift, but the suspension will need a major jolt to get that compressed, right?

With a 2" TT and shackles you can run up to a 33x12.50 with some trimming up front.

Same goes for a truck with a 3" body lift only.

TT/shackles + a BL allows you to run 35x12.50s

Do you think the 32's will fit without trimming? I don't want to cut or bend the sheet metal.

Maybe a very small amount of trimming to the plastic inner fender well. You won't need to cut sheet metal and if you take your time cutting the plastic (if you need to), you will cut so little that it won't be noticeable.

If you do go with 31s you'll always wonder if you could've gotten a bigger tire... I wish I had gone with 37s after my SAS because 35s are too small for the lift I have.
