So, I recently got pulled over by the lovely local police for having my tires stick out past my fenders about 2.5". For $8.11 & 2 hours I added some beautiful fender flares I made from garden trimming. These at first looked good to me, but now they're starting to look dumb and cheap.

The cheapest actual fender flares I can find are from LMC Truck magazine, cost about $100 if I remember and have a 3" Flare (exactly what I need). I just can't seem to find any pictures of them on an explorer. If anyone has any pictures of them or any experience with them, post some pictures or some helpful info! Or if anyone has any other ideas for fenderflares that be great. I know of the fiberglass fenders but that's a little out of my budget right now. Thanks for any help.

you could also get factory flares from a 2nd gen 4 door, like off of an eddie bauer, way way cheaper from a yard then buying from an aftermarket company and would look and fit like stock.. bc well, they are basically. i couldnt find flares for a 2 dr to save my life so i got ones from a 99 sport that are about 2, 2.5 inches out from my fender, works great, paid $20 for em.

Didn't even think about that, buy them for $20 bucks, spray paint them black, and im good! thanks buddy

i sprayed mine with truck bedliner.. turned out good, well one side anyway, the side i scuffed and used adhesion promotor on. make sure you get the wheel well peices and the rocker panel runners, if you dont want to use the rocker part you can cut off the ends and attach them, that way the wheel flares are flush against the truck. when you look at a set youll see what i mean. no problem, btw.

So pretty much grab everything from the tip of the front fender to the beginning of the rear bumber? By the wheel well pieces you mean the inner pieces or just the "flare" part.

Also, can you do me a favor and run out and see how much coverage it gives from the fender?

you will need to grab the front wheel flares, the rocker panel runners, and bc you have a 4dr the section of the flare on the rear doors, and the rear wheel flares. there are a frew people on here who have done this, i think if you look at older pictures of Rick's (the admin) truck he used the rear wheel flares off of a 2nd gen. there are lots of options in factory wheel flares, 95-98 had the flares on eddie bauer models and some limiteds, 99-01 4drs came with a couple different styles on XLTs, EBs, Lmtds, and the ones on an XLS 4dr are different from them all. best thing to do is go to your local yard and tell them youre looking for trim pieces and see if theyll let you walk around.

here are some pictures of what 99 2dr sport flares look like on my 93 sport, these may vary slightly from 4dr pieces

Looks good  Look's like it might not cover enough though, you have 15x8 rims with 10.50 wide tires right? It looks like it covers just enough of the tire, I got 12.50 wide tires so I'm afraid it might stick out a little too far. Guess I'll have to measure how far my tires stick out in the front and see if the ~2.5" is enough. Thanks for the help!

youre right on the rim and tire width. there are some 99+ explorers that have an extra lip on the already wide wheel flares. try to find one of those. why ford put 2.5 -3" wheel flares on a vehicle that came stock with 235/75s is beyond me, the stock tires tuck in the fenders w/out a flare. oh well, its good for guys like us bc we can use them as way cheaper alternatives for fender flares.

Hm... not really a big fan of the extra lip, I'll just have to see if that eddie bauer ones are enough to cover it. If not, for only $100 I can get 3" ones from LMC.

thats not too bad. i was just leafing through my LMC catalog though and didnt see a 4 pack for $100 or anything longer than 1 3/4. i know warn makes some nice flares bout theyre like $400 a set

ok.. found em in the first gen book. IMO those look tackier than the ones you made. ive sold ones similar to those at work and they were nothing more than a piece of thick rubber. if youre gonna do it.. go all out. thats what i say when i have money. haha

Haha trust me if I had the money I would have gotten the fiberglass fenders. I guess I'll just get the 2nd gen flares and if the cop doesnt think it's enough that sucks for him. haha

so have you done any thinking about the SOA conversion?

where in pa are you roughly? if you dont mind me asking, just seein how close you are to me. im in north central wv

Just get the cheap pacer flares
