Location of the 4 wheel drive module - U2023 code

So I need to replace the 4 x 4 module and I can't find it. I've looked behind the globe box and removed the passenger side kick plate and I can't find it.

When I put the truck into drive, it feels like the 4 wheel drive fights between being on and off. After driving a few eet, it will kick off and then I get a check Adv track error.

I ran a code reader on it and I'm getting a U2023 Transfer case /4 x 4 control module error.

Any help with this would be appreciated.

in my 2nd gen at least the 4x4 shifts are controlled by the GEM which is behind the dash. theres no seperate 4wd module at least in my '98
