I bought a 1988 Bronco Eddie Bauer Edition for 500 bucks to just mess around in. Anyway, the guy before me that had it used it in mud drags so he locked it in four low. Now that i have it i want to be able to have it in 2WD so i can drive on the highway. He told me that i could go in the transfer case and change it manually or i could buy the sensor for it so it will just work withthe buttons. But i have looked everywhere for this info and cant find it. how do i do it manually or where could i buy the sensor and hod do i install it??? i really need help.

Thank you very much!!!!!

this is what your looking for. It is behind the shift motor, looks like a little starter. you remove the shift motor, and turn this with a pair of pliers. Point it to high, like this one is in the pic.

So i just remove the four bolts at the back of the transfer case and it should be up in there somewhere???

That's what you will see if you have the external 4x4 shift motor bolted to the transfer-case, after you unbolt it. read the 4x4 troubleshooting sticky in the Stock 1991-1994 forum, there's a link in the 1st or 2nd paragraph that goes to the shift-motor-rebuild thread, that will have the instructions you need with pics to follow along with.

Thanks!! But is there anyplace i can buy this sensor so i dont have to crawl under it evertime to change from high to low? I've searched and dont even know what it looks like or how it goes on.

The sensor is part of the 4x4 shift motor assembly. It tells the 4x4 computer what position the electric motor is in and supplies info and power to the dash lights to indicate 4x4 mode and what range (low or high range when 4x4 is engaged) The sensor rarely goes bad but there is a polyurethane bump-stop that keeps the sensor from going too far and off the electrical contacts. Those bump-stops flatten on the side when they age and will let the shift motor go too far in one direction, when the shift-motor goes too far, it loses contact with the copper pads and then the 4x4 shift motor doesn't know where it's at and then the motor will refuse to move as it's lost it's electrical power.

I took the motor off and did it manually. But now the part that goes over little knob to change it doesn't match up with it when i put it back on. And i cant get it to turn either. What do it do?

Well, you can remove the shift motor till you get one that works.

I am assuming it wont turn when you have the key on, trans in nuetrel, foot on the brake, and put the selector in low, than back to high.

You can drive with out the shift motor in place, you wont harm anything.
