Locking mechinism in door doesnt work...

I have a 99 ford explorer sport. When I go to unlock or lock the door with the automatic lock button the drivers side door wont lock or unlock. I have to do it manually all the time. The drivers side door locks and unlocks sometimes when I press the automatic unlock, lock button. What should I do to fix this? Does it need lube and how would I do this? Please be VERY specific....

I dont have a key pad on my explorer.

usually it is the gizmo inside the door. I have had good luck with taking it apart and cleaning and lubricating everything. New parts are not expensive.
