Hi, all. I'm just curious if anyone has hauled something decent size over 2,000 - 3,000 miles roundtrip? I'll be spending winters out of town in random parts of the country and towing with me perhaps a uhaul trailer or even a car trailer, but wanted to know if the Explorer would be able to even handle this.

Thoughts?

You won't be towing a U-Haul. They don't rent to Explorer owners.

I tow a 5 x 8 enclosed trailer with about 1500 lbs. in it. twice a year back and forth to Florida 2000 miles ea. way. No problems excert for poor gas mileage, which usually is around 16 with it. Without it is is between 22 and 23. As for handling, you don't know its there. This year I'm using a hitch carrier and carrying less stuff. Too much added cost with a trailer.

Thanks for the info. I know the story behind U-Haul/Explorers, but was just using it as an example as I can't think of any other companies! I was more interested in knowing if people actually tow long distances.

The links are great! Thanks for that, I found a few when searching about what people tow, but not how far. This is perfect -- appreciate it.

Ah, that's great to hear. I'll probably be towing about 2,500 miles each way the same. I was looking into towing my Rubicon on a car trailer, but I think that just might be too much stress based on the people I've spoken to. Looks like the 5x8 enclosed is an option. Thanks for that.
