I’ve been looking at a few 17-18 explorers for my wife. They all have been limited mixed 2wd, 4wd. All had the 2.3l EcoBoost.

I have turned away from them due to a similar issue with all of them, some bad some worse.

the battery looks like they had been leaking and have caused pitting on all of the surrounding areas.

I have searched the forum but have not seen similar issues. But can someone tell me is this is a known issue.

I've seen that corrosion on the battery hold-down on other vehicles. It may be from what PeterK9 said - cleaning the battery terminals. It could also be from gasses from the battery or just moisture over time.

The other corrosion you noted may not be from leaks, but from moisture in general (road spray, etc...). I've also seen that on my personal fleet and know they have not had leaks. Although I can say when I had the coolant flushed on my SHO, they were sloppy and apparently spilled antifreeze in some places. Prior to that the engine bay was pretty clean.

The Edge we just traded did this as well. I think it has something to do with the design and/or materials of the positive connector. I have never had a battery terminal corrode as bad as the Edge one did. We traded the Edge for a 2017 Explorer XLT 4x4 with the Sport Appearance package. Also, has the V6 and not the 4 banger. In my opinion this vehicle is too heavy for the 4 cylinder turbo, and it's top end speed and passing numbers show that. We usually keep our vehicles long term, so the turbo 4 was not even a consideration for us. We looked at some Limited as well, and most either had the 4 cylinder turbo and a moonroof or the V6 and no moonroof. Odd combinations we were seeing on the Limiteds. Our XLT even has the second row buckets. Only thing we do not have is the memory seats, but we can live without it. Good luck on your searches. Heads up, look closely at the front edge of the hood. Some of them, including the one we bought, have paint bubbling due to poorly prepared aluminum. Ford will replace with a new hood.
