Hello, I am looking to do some traveling this summer and want to buy a rig I can sleep in and the explorer is one of the options I am looking into.

From the reading I have already did on here I learned that the 5.0 Explorers are the most dependable of engine options. It was stated in a thread that the years 98 or 99 to 01 5.0 2WD were the most dependable and I am curious what was the difference between them and the 5.0 in a 96' or 97' 2WD is. Why are they more dependable?

Also what kind of mileage could I expect out of a 5.0 2WD highway driving at 60 mph?

And just cause I am curious are there any 4WD Explorers that had the 5.0 and a selectable transfer case where one could remain in 2WD and unlock the hubs to get better mileage on the highway.

One more question, with all but the front seats removed or folded down how much room is there to lay down and sleep?

I've had a 97, 98 and now an 01 5.0 and if you're not modding, aside from little things they're the same. I have 190K on my 97.

If you can, get a 98-01 because they upgraded to GT-40P heads.

You can probably expect around 19-20mpg doing 60 on the hwy, bone stock.

5.0's came in either 2WD or AWD. You can get selectable by doing a 4406 swap, but it does involve a good amount of work.

I'm 6ft, and with the back seat folded down I could sleep comfortably, considering it's a truck. Prolly have to sleep diagonal though.

Best news- I read before that with the seats dropped down, a twin mattress fits perfectly between the wheel wells.

Sweet! this is good to know

In shopping I have seen quite a few AWD Explorers up here in the northwest and have just assumed that the gas mileage would be much worse than the 2WD version but am curious how much worse it is. Does anyone have good information or experience with the two versions in the 5.0 Explorers and know how much of a difference I would see in the fuel economy between the two?

Government numbers show them being the same but I don't trust their numbers.
