Loose Steering

When I'm going down the road above 50 mph my steering shakes. I jacked up a tire and if I push on the front of it, it moves in and the other tire moves out. Steering wheel moves too. I don't remember this happening in the past.

Upper and lower balljoints are moog and not very old, same with the outer tie rod end.

Truck was aligned about a month ago, going to get it done again in the next couple of days just in case.

Is this a sign of a bad rack?

so you mean that the tire is moving towards the rear and front of the vehicle? your alignment shop should determine exactly what is going on with it, if they are good.

It could aslo be a sign of an unbalanced wheel or tread separation.

Do you mean other tire as in other side of the vehicle or outer? I'm no mechanic here, but if you jack up your truck and push the tire inwards the other tire and the steering wheel should move. Atleast how I am understanding it from what you are describing.

inner tie rods have the same symptom. My steering was loose and i replaced them, now its nice and tight.

Could also be bad hub bearing assemblies. I had a tie rod replaced, the mech brought me back and almost shook my wheel off cause of the hub. When i pulled it out, the damn bearings fell out. Gues i was lucky this time

Finally got around to getting an alignment today. Shop said the left outer tie rod is worn and not holding the tie rod in place. Then they tried to sell me a new Moog one, when there is already a Moog on there with a lifetime warranty.... Replacement is supposed to get here Saturday though, hopefully that will fix it.

The hub on that side was bad (I had replaced it before making this thread). I wonder if that could contribute to the tie rod end failing?
