loud ticking at start up

I have a 2003 xlt 4.6 with 166k, problem is at start up i have a very loud tick that sounds horrible and then goes away after 15- 30 + seconds. if it was my old 5.0 I would guess a lifter/ rocker arm. any info would rock. Thanx guys and gals for all the knowledge

I have an 04 w/ 4.6l had the same problem so i put a can of SEAFOAM in the engine and ran it about 500 miles. Then when i changed my oil put a bottle of RISLONE in with the oil filling it to specs. Noise is now gone.

im a believer in seafoam...probably one of little oil ports to one of the head is clogged...good luck

First thing I would do in either case is check the oil level.

A few years back my brother thought he had a bad oil pump in his 4.6. The problem was that the oil level was down about 1 1/2 quarts. He has kept an eye on the oil since then and has had no issues.
