I have my X in the shop and they are thinking that the lower ball joint on the driver side might need to be replaced. Anyone have any idea what kind of cost I am looking at?

Well, as well as the ball joint, you're probably going to need an alignment after it's done. The ball joint itself can be bought for about $30 (Napa lists one at 29.49) and labor to put it in will probably be 1.5 hours or so.

I'm guessing they'll charge you $125 plus an alignment...

Too bad you're not closer. I've got all the tools to put new balljoints in..It's actually a pretty easy job.

Yea i would have to agree totally with carlover, its quite simple to do, just need ambition, also the ball joint press im sure you can probably rent from autozone, but you can even get away with a floor jack if you really wanted to.

I wish I had the tools and room to do this, but I am in Cleveland, OH and we've been getting dumped on with snow and I have no garage to work in. Kinda got my hands tied.

they gave me a price couple weeks ago. all four ball joint and alinement $650

hmm, im not sure if thats a good price or not, i mean for an alignment its about 80 dollars then the upper balljoints are about 100 a peice, then lowers are about 40 a peice, so figure 360 dollars in parts if thats included it doesnt sound to bad, id say maybe around 600 or so is a reasonable price with the parts included. but im not sure ive always done them myself.

well the upper was $140 apiece and the alinement bolt was $40. Yes I thought the price was high too. That why I am going to do them myself.

damn the uppers on autozone the last time i checked was 100 for the left and like 107 for the right, my alignment cost about 60 because i had a discount. but it was supposed to be 80, sounds like your deal is way better for the alignment

I just bought moog ball joints for $44 (lowers) $45 (uppers) they are still in the mail. Did I buy the wrong uppers? The difference between $107 and $45 is HUGE!
What year Explorer are you buying for, the '91 in your profile?

On the second generation Explorers, you have to replace the entire upper control arm. The upper ball joints are not serviceable by themselves.
