M90 rebuild (rudy)

well figured i would start a new thread.just a quick background.did the whole build on my explorer but built it using stock head gaskets and head bolts.did it really as a safety net and i just couldnt afford head studs at the time.well to say the least i blew the head gaskets off from it wile i was in the mountains on a forum trip about two years later.

i picked up a 1994 ranger, its got the 4.0 OHV and is a 5 speed 2wd.the plan is to pull the motor out of the explorer and rebuild it.

this thread will basically cover the rebuild and build up of the new ranger.it will basically end up as a street race truck.ive named it Rudy:D:D so let the fun begin.

Things are FINALLY coming together, about time!!

Tunes are done..wrote me a E50 and a 93 Gasoline tune..definitely says i HAVE to come back for a dyno tune and that he cant guarantee the base tunes as the Injector data is totally different

LOL. I have a new respect for tunes that are just 'written' and emailed. There's a lot of stuff to get 'close' to have a running vehicle to actually start tuning with.

O yea..he had my old tune to base it off from so not totally shooting in the dark..all he had to do is change valves for larger injectors and set the a/f to 11.9,which is stoich for a lambda=1 for E50

I hear a lambda of .085 (10.2a/f) gives better performance though. .

I need to switch my gauge over to lambda, right now its set for a lambda of 1 to equal 14.7

Got my tunes.we talked alot about tuning and timing. .he said he copied my timing tables from last tune, did this for both E50 and the 93 tune..he said i wouldnt run full boost on the 93 tune unless i see the same IAT as i did with 10 Lbs..said on E50 go crazy, its safe..

The old and new tunes has 15* wot but 10*@3,000..he said his program shows stock had i believe 33* and he took 18* outa it,giving me 15*..also asked about IAT and how much it pulls,it pulls 6* at 220*

Also dropped the T5 off at my buddies..hope he was pulling my leg but he was talking like 4 hours and how big of a PIA it was gonna be..told him his wife just told me the blue light was on and they'd fiance it ..lol

I'm not sure about the 4.0ohv factory strategy, but mine pulls 3 degree's at an iat of 150, and another 3 degrees at about 190.

So, the 15 degrees at wot should also be referenced by rpm's. is it 10 degrees at and above 3000rpm? Also what load levels do you hit wot? I doubt that question can really be answered till you get on the dyno.

It would be nice if he could send you a picture of the borderline knock table from his phone. This would help get an idea. I'm sure what he's setting timing in a manner that makes sense.

15*@5000,10*@3000..just the 2 that he threw out..said last time at 3000 under load i got detonation. .

I emailed him copies on the "max timing" and "borderline detonation" tables that 2000StreetRod posted.he said his files were a little different and he was reading them from the ecm.He showed me the tables but i didnt think about taking a picture as it was base tune..also showed me the tables on how much timing was being pulled based on IAT..it was setup like you said Dono think it pulled 3*@160 3*@190 and 6*@220 as a safe mode

Sooo couple things..im selling my motorcycle. .i plan to use the money to pay for the motor and was planning 2 other surprises. .might as well let them out..i was planning on getting a paint job (still do)..

The other..WAS planning on getting some 1.8 roller rockers (wont mention names)Sooo not going to talk bad or say he's wrong or anything but will point out the mathematical side of it and been confirmed by comp cams..

Lets start with the 422 cam..it has a intake lobe height of .334 and exhaust of .333

Next this is where it gets technical. .there has been only one set of springs that match the specs of the 422 and will work with our heads and retainers..its the comp cams 988 springs..

The 988 have a installed height of 1.6 and a coil bind of 1.0 and need a safety cushion of .060 <<the industry standard. .

To get valve lift you multiply (cam lobe lift)x(rocker ratio)
(.334)x (rocker ratio)
Stock rocker ratio is 1.5

Math time...
(Coil bind)-(installed height)-(coil cushion)=MAX LIFT
1.0-1.6-.06=0.540 <<< max lift

Max ratio rockers with comp cams 422 i can run is 1.6(.530 lift)

They do not make any springs ive found or comp cams found that will work with the comp cams 422 OR 410 with a rocker ratio greater than 1.6

Now the do sell 1.6 ratio roller rockers but "he" should let people know 1.7 or 1.8 ONLY work with stock cams..will NOT work with a aftermarket cam....unless you change the spring height which effect the seat pressure and open pressure..or unless you go under the .060 coil space before coil bind

1.6 aint worth $880 PERIOD
Here'sa diagram they sent me confirming where to measure for safe max lift before coil bind...also confirmed the "coil bind" measurement does not include the safety margin, its just when bind/damage happens

Horse power

How much horse power to gain when going from 1.5 to 1.6?

How much horse power to gain when going from 1.5 to 1.6?

Doubt any..only benifit i would think is having different lifters and a roller rocker..

Well painting the truck is outa the question for now..everywhere I've been has been over $ 2500..

Called and talked to my machinist to see where hes at and how he felt about roller rockers..he seems to think having a roller and different lifter would be worth it.says not going to gain much power but the benefits of rollers would help drastically up higher in the rpms..he also said the duration changes which would help alot..

He suggested 1.7 rollers.said 1.8 really would be over kill and no way to get .601 lift safely outa the springs..the .567 from the 1.7 he says would be safe..he said you wont truly get the full .334 lift outa the cam because of the hydraulic lifters, said i could lose up to .20-30 easily. .he also suggested a minimum of .50 cushion for a long term motor..

So with all that said, ive contacted Tom and had a talk with him about the 1.7s i also asked about the top rocker stabilizer bar hes about to come out with..he hasnt respond about that but i definitely can make that here in the shop..

Hopefully this bike sells today and i can get these rockers and new injectors in here soon..motor and trans should be done here very soon

Bike sold...bunch of goodies is on the way..

Well some picture time..ill start with some tires i found on Craigslist. .they are toyo R888 305/35/18 .they have about 3/4 tread left and paid $140 for them both..they are 12.5" wide so they will not fit my rims..im sending my 2 rear rims off to weldcraft to have them widened by 3 inches making them 18x12 wide, cost $250 PER RIM.should take 4 weeks..i plan to run 345s,more on that after these wear down.

Took some measurements make sure these will clear for now..this is where these will sit..pictured next to my 295s

Next i took and cut one coil outa the front to lower it 2.5" and also had to cut 1" outa the C-notches in the rear, the sway bar mounts was hitting them..truck sits 1" lower than before i added the new body mounts and 1" spacers

I got my new DW 60mm EV14 78 Lb injectors in also..they are same length as stockers so no need for top hats..

Lastly i got a purge for my nitrous. .also got the NEX blue cloud LED illuminators..they are pretty ricey but hey i like them and they are ford bue..lol

Blue Nitrous purge

That looks AWESOME!

Nice fat tires by the way, cant wait to see them on the widened rims.
Injectors look like quality stuff too.

New side pic with lower stance?

X2!! And the 295's looked huge

X2!! And the 295's looked huge

The 295 are pretty big, about 12"..they will be going on the front..lol those 305 are sticky ass tires so hopefully they work well..shoot for $140 they are worth every penny..they are an autocross tire.

Shhh be very quiet, the baby is sleeping. .haha
