Hi All

I have an eddie bauer 2002 4x4
I just changed the tranny last week
I live in Canada, so the weather can get extremely cold

It's been a couple of days that I have this problem
When I start the car, on park, it will go up to 3000rpm
same when on neutral

When I hold down the brakes and am on drive, the rpm will go up to 1500

I was able to solve the problem sometimes by turning off the car and pressing down hard on the accelerator

I got the throttle cleaned yesterday by a garage and it didn't solve the issue

Can anyone help me? I cannot bear to put more repairs on this truck as it costed me 3000$ for the tranny

thank you for your help

sounds like your IAC (Idle Air Control) valve is stuck open. I would take it off and clean it, or replace the IAC altogether they run about $30.

Which engine do you have?

Not a bad place to start. Doesnt cost anything but your time

Hi
I did what you told me, but the problem is still there.
This time, it only started when i got on the highway :(

IF your IAC is fine then goto the next step, Check for vacuum leaks. Chances are there is a crack or a hole in a hose that is sucking too much air. It would also be good to clean your MAF. It's odd that you don't have a code popping up though. 3000rpms should throw a code within a few run cycles.

POS mountaineer, it's not the same problem as the link you sent me, thanks though

There is no check engine light, nothing
Everytime it happens, i put it on park, turn off the engine
pump the accelerator really hard
then when i start it again, it idles at 900 - 1000 rpm

Not sure about the V8, but the V6 2002-05 is drive by wire. No IAC to clean. You have to get yourself some software in order to fix this, because you have to see what the sensors are telling the PCM. The PCM controls idle, and it is very, very complicated how it determines what the idle should be (google FMEM Ford for an example). Also, you need a Ford Service DVD, not some stupid chiltons' manual. You can get them off ebay, and then follow the pinpoint tests.

And that's reason number 1095 to not like drive by wire.....

So from what you said I gather the newer DBW engines are using the throttle body itself to control idle? as opposed to using a separate IAC valve? I guess that makes sense since they already have the servo there for the TB.

<rant mode>
I just don't get the advantages of the DBW system. When I want throttle I want it now, I don't want to wait for my computer to calculate what it thinks I should have. You know, if everything is DBW we are one step away from the government stepping in and mandating what they think the safe limits are for acceleration. After all there is a lot of money to be made by the insurance lobbyists...

a little update,
the problem persisted and I finally got a check engine light

at the garage, the machine said it was the IAC, so it was changed
low and behold, the problem was still there after

they checked for leaks in the body vacuum with a smoke machine and found none

anyone has other inputs for me?<

thanks for your help
