i' need to know if you remove the manual hubs is there a specific way to reinstall them??? the reason i ask this is when i was in pismo i locked my hubs, put it into 4x4 as always and found out later that i only had 2 wheel drive...the front shaft is turning...my truck is manual everything so i'm hoping it's not the pumpkin...
i have only had a tire shop swap tires and remount them for me and they are the only ones who have touched it besides me and i have never had them off...if they had them off for any reason could they have put them back on wrong???

anybody??? i've been searching and can't find what i'm looking for, thanks..

still looking for some advice, thanks

I know on my 94 Ex. hubs that I have they just pull right off. I noticed when I put them back on it is easier to have them on disengaged so the teeth can syc. with the spline.

Do they look like these?

Here is the splined axel I'm talking about.
Good Luck

do you have a pic of the inside of the hub...it will help me determine if something is missing or broke...now i'm wondering if they had them off for any reason and if they couldn't get it back on, if they forced it on or broke something...like i said, i went wheeling a couple months ago and this time i must say i was surprised not to have 4x4 and the dunes is not a place to start tearing it apart...thanks

You indicate the front drive shaft is turning, but you didn't indicate if the front axles where also turning.. If the front axles both move it indicates one or both hubs are broken (it only takes 1 busted hub to keep you in 4x2). In most cases a busted diff would make a TON of noise.

Manual HUB check (open diff):

1) With the HUB Unlocked turn the axle shaft by hand and verify it turns freely. If the wheel is off the ground it will not move.

2) Lock the HUB and try turning the shaft by hand. If the axle still turns the hub is broken or not locked. If the wheel is off the ground it will move if you turn the axle with enough force.

3) If the HUBs check out ok you will need to confirm the front drive shaft is getting power.. Put a piece of tape or mark a spot on the front drive shaft. Unlock both hubs and then drive around in 4x4. If the drive shaft moved it indicates the T-case was working, otherwise the T-case may have an issue.

If it's like mine nothing to come out. I knew I had a pic somewhere in my photobucket. Had to check through a zillion.

thank you guys....i've got my tranny guy coming over to check out my X and then i got to go to another jobsite...i will probably do this late tonight or tomorow morning...again thanks for the info and pics....
btw. i know the drive shaft turns cause when i got her stuck good she was tapping on the cross member and i also verified it by visual in forward and reverse while the rear wheels was just digging deeper, lol

Well, to try to help with your original question, sometimes when I go to put back on a hub, it won't fit flush the first try, so I rotate it one stud over, slip it on, repeat if necessary, till it fits on right.
Does that make sense?

makes total sense...i'm just coming to the conclusion someone swapped my hubs when i dropped the truck off to have tires swapped...sounds crazy i know but i've had no problem and now, no 4x4...and yes i'm going to do a thorough inspection on my front end before i commit to that statement...my truck got to pretty and if i would have taken my X in they wouldn't have even touch them lol...

I used to do it that way but I now do it slightly differently.. I slip the hub over the studs and if it doesn't seat fully then I pull it off slightly so I can rotate the hub & studs together. All your trying to do is match up the splines in the hub to the splines on the axle and moving the hub & rotor together works like a charm.

Here is a link to the installation instructions for manual hubs.

i still haven't had time to remove them yet but i did stop by dependable offroad and checked out the price for a set of new warns, 163 bucks and i can have them the next day...i need to sell some of my parts and work twice as much but i will be ordering these first chance i get and maybe only one of my hubs is bad so i will have a spare...

Get the Warn Jeep hubs, thier stronger than the ones for the ranger.

i'll read up, thanks...

Just thinking, if your axle shafts were still turning freely while in 4wd then its not your hubs.

If it turns out the hubs are the problem I still have my stock hubs if you want to use them for the time being, I was going to toss them anyways.

yea buddy, hook me up...that would be awesome...btw, i drove project X today :D

Its been several days... have you had a chance to crawl under your rig and perform the manual hub checK? It can't take more than 5 min (no jacking up the vehicle or removing any parts). :feedback:
