mass air flow question

on a 96 sohc v6, is it ok to remove the small plate in the stock mass air flow sensor behind the 2 actual sensors? just curious, because once i installed a k&n cone filter it started making a loud noise like a horn when it idled. noise is coming from maf sensor. thought i would remove the plate to decrease the "horn" noise. any thoughts would be appreciated.

Firstly, you have the OHV V6, not the SOHC.

Secondly, you can remove the screen in the MAS without any problems.

Thirdly, the "horn" noise is due to a faulty IAC, idle air control valve, and you should replace it.
