My 97 Mountaineer's dipstick says Mercon. Can/Should I use Mercon V?
What synthetic does everyone use?
Thanks

V8 or V6? The V8 has the 4R70W trans and the V6 has the 5R55E. The 5R55E requires Mercon V, don't use regular Mercon. The 4R70W uses regular Mercon fluid.

It will not hurt it if you put merc 5 in a merc only trans....but donot put merc/dex3 into a mercon 5 trans.

Lordy people. 97 mounties came only with V8's. Only put mercon 5 in thier. Dont even think about putting anything else. If you take it to a shop they will put versi trans...a universal fluid..its safe for the tranny but request mercon 5. Thats what the factory put in and thats what i personally would like to stick with.

Are you sure about that? I thought that they were offered with both V6 and V8 engines. The service manual seems to indicate that the SOHC was offered in the Mounty.

Confused !

My Mountaineer says Mercon right on the stick. It is the 5.0 engine.
So, would Mercon 5 be O.K. ?
Thanks for all the reply's
Joe

My 97 owners manual (Explorer) says use Mercon for the 4R70W. Do you have your owners manual for the Mountaineer? I bet it says the same.

If you want to use synthetic, AMSOil is the only one that I know of that meets the Mercon and Mercon V spec. That's what I use in my 5R55E.

The newest Mobil1 says it's for Mercon and MerconV.
