I just got a message center and eatc for an upgrade to my 98 Explorer. The message center is from a 99 Explorer and the eatc a 97 Explorer. Will thoes work properly in my vehicle Ive heard they will just want to make sure. Second I do not want to even try the installations myself due to not being very good with electrical stuff so if I got Ford to do it how much do you guys think itd run me I have everything all they would need to do is hook everything up, theyre rate is 89 an hour.

Thanks!

Dude search! at 89 bucks an hour times 2 full days or so... you do the math

i dont think they will work. everything i have read has said that they need to be from the same year as your truck. and it should come from a vehicle that has the same engine as your truck.

^^^x2, besides, i don't think a dealership would even touch something like that. you should try and get a message center for the correct year. engine, i am not sure about, but year, yes. as for a ETAC, there is also sensors that go along with that. you would be better off swapping the dash harness if you are going to be putting those two things in.

i doubt a ford dealership would do it

i researched how to do it in my 95 - the message center needs several additions that i can't recall

the eatc needs a temp sensor inside, a temp sensor outside, a sunlight sensor, a different blend door actuator and blower resistor - the blend door actuator is a project in itself - and the resistor is almost impossible to find (its solid state and over a hundred bucks) - the wiring must all be run because the harness is not in place for explorers without the eatc (or message center)

if you have all the parts, there are some excellent threads here on the howto - get the ford cd and go for it - i would check for model year compatibility first though

The message center should work since a 98 uses the same VSS signal as the 99. (VSS signal is actually distributed from the ABS module) That is the big difference you need to look for. Well, there are others too...but in this case, you should be fine. If you are really concerned, get your wiring diagram (you will absolutely need a factory wiring diagram) and check all the pinouts off the ECM and make sure they are all there for your message center. They should be.

The EATC should also work. I'm trying to think of a reason it wouldn't and can't come up with anything. You just need to make sure you have the same "color" head unit that the system calls for. You also need to have the ENTIRE system. You can't be piecing those together out of different units. Remember to use an EATC blend door actuator...and in fact, I would take the opportunity to put a new blend door, actuator, and heater core in at this time. You will also need the fan speed controller. Can't use the resistor set up normal climate control uses.

If you pay someone straight time to do this job, it would be cheaper to sell yours and buy one with all this in it. Seriously. You will have a labor bill approaching 2 thousand dollars easy. Remember, the whole dash will need to come out. The plenum assy is different on EATC. In fact, even the evap case under the hood has a different part number for EATC. These are good mods if you do them yourself. If you have to pay someone for their time, forget it.

Thanks alot for adressing every question and them some!

Although I bought the eatc from ebay and it is just the "core" itself no wirirng nothing how should I go about that is it no good now since you said the pieces cant be pieced together on it? Or is there still a way?

Thanks

need message center fore 1998 eddie bower

EATC won't work man sorry....See in 98 ford switched the wiring for the harness....get a EATC for 98 - 01....as everyone else has said...you need 3 parts other than the module (make sure it has the wiring with it)..aspirator hose, light diode (sun sensor), and temp sensor..once again make sure all these things have the wiring with them...my swap took me a whole week...mostly cause i was scared of screwing something up....paying someone to do would cost you...honestly do it yourself...you'll get a feeling of accomplishment and will learn a thing or two...

PS...search the forum...there are a lot of people ask this question every month or so...there are at least 3 how to threads with many questions just like yours

If you really want them in your vehicle, you're better off to find a truck with them already installed- you'll spend more than the truck is worth to put them in. Neither one is even close to plug and play.

He already did it and made a write up about it...

You sir are halfway correct I did the message center:salute:

EATC wont be a problem either I just need the wiring diagram for the harnesses for a 97, and match them with my wiring and plug in the vacuum hoses. No big deal and I will have a write up when Im done

This may help...help me a lot...good luck

PS: do it slowly

Exact one Im using

Also as far as I know it will still work the only difference is the harnesses like you said which they are just in different order as far as I know. And the display is blue which is good for me since Im changing my interior lights to blue:salute:

lol i have a 1997 xlt awd.. do i even wanna attempt this ?? or can i just switch my heat and air switchs to the digital ones from a limited or something?? and another question.. why are there soo many harness ends in my dash like to plug things in?

You must do the entire conversion to utilize the ATC controls. It's much more than just a controller...it's an entire system.

The reason you may have wire connectors that don't plug into anything is due to your vehicle having a different option package. It used to be common to utilize a harness that was wired for everything, then only plug in what options were ordered. This can be a very very good thing if you want to add options yourself later. Or, someone before you could have removed items they didn't want or need.

Did you get anywhere with that EATC upgrade?
