Apparently the last time I got an oil change, the mechanic never put the dipstick back---so I've been driving without one the past few months. I assume I've probably lost some oil through the opening, but my concern right now is checking the oil. I was going to change it this weekend.

1--how do I check my oil between now and when I get a new dipstick? I'll probably find someone on my street with an explorer. But what would be a plan B assuming I can't find anyone?

2--the dipstick shaft formed a hard crust about an inch or 2 in. How can I safely dissolve/remove that? I (gently) poked at it with a needlenose pliers and its pretty damn hard.

Your advice is appreciated

Maryland!

1) since you dont have a dipstick, I'd just fill the engine to the oil capacity specification (see owners manual). That number should do for now until you get a dipstick. You probably did not loose any oil through the missing dipstick, but rather, introduced some foreign objects through the opening. So maybe put some duct tape over it for now.

^-- link doesnt lead to a dipstick.
