Marshall did you stay at the Silver Sage where Gerald was?

Okay, I need t know for planning purposes. Is it June 3-5 or are there still other ideas in the air. I am just typing to subscribe too, but I do want to make a run in early June and this looks to be a good one to make:D

yes, June 3-5 is the official date

I need more info on Canyonlands campground. Is it free, a nominal fee? Is there facilities, or is it primitive camping? Is there a site that I can find it at.
I'm in for the run, but I don't know about lodging yet.

[edit] I found info on Canyonlands, but is there any free camping in Moab? with a place for a tow rig/trailer?
Is a tent location big enough for the ex, a tow rig, and a trailer? Or do I need a RV spot?
Sorry, I've never been to Moab, only flown over it.
-Ryan

www.moab-utah.com has jsut about all of the lodging/etc info you can get for Moab. Marshall, if you meant the Silver Sage on the south side of town, the phone is 435-259-4420 and they have a page in the above link.

Kevin, yep, that's the weekend, would be great to see you in that bright red rig

Ryan, the RV spots are on concrete slabs, so a tent wouldn't work on one. Most of the tent spots are big enough for all that if you put the tent on the end of the site. Don't make the same mistake that I did last time; I requested a tent spot nearest to the RVs (where Rick stays) - that put me right by the central bathhouse and I never got any sleep because I was constantly awaken all night long by people walking through my site to get to the bathroom. I'll probably make resv this weekend and I'm requesting a spot in the back of the tentsites.

There is free camping in Moab, but it's in various areas first-come first-served, and nothing you could depend on getting even if you knew where all to look for it at. Canyonlands is a great deal because it is smack-dab in the middle of town and as cheap as KOA and other campgrounds. Of course, being in the Moab area, there are also tons of national park campgrounds in the outlying areas also.

:( I wont be out near Moab on my roadtrip until mid july .... looks like you guys have fun out there!

<sigh> i hate to say it, but this might be the first Explorer forum Moab trip that I miss in 4 years (been to the last 3, amazingly)

just lost my job and with my new puppy, i've gotta worry about keeping her alive and vet visits long before i can think about taking another trip to my favorite place in the world :(

i'm still going to subscribe and see what i can do, if something crazy happens i'll see you guys there.

Thanks for the info. I just picked up a magazine at the store that has a big 60 page article on all sorts of stuff in Moab, from trails to cabins.

I'll see what the others in my party want to do, and then figure it all out.
thanks

Thats the place we stayed. Don't have a number, but check the link in Gerald's post and I'm sure you'll find the info your looking for.

Jarred, That sucks! I always look forward to wheeling with you. Best of luck with the job search and your puppy.

quiksilverdh, If you want someone to wheel with when you do make it to Moab let me know, I'm only 1.5 hours away and always looking for an excuse to go to Moab.

I am planning on attending this, and will be staying past the weekend, into the following week. A group of zuk's are showing up, so I'm going to have LOTS of fun!

What you don't have fun with us? Are you getting to good to hang out with the X's???? :p

I still have to get a roll bar before I can go. It is in the works though and I will be buying the tubing for it this weekend.

Tdavis- We could meet along the 80 somewhere and caravan the rest of the way.

I tried Moab in mid-July a couple of years ago; it was so hot that the town was deserted and no one was fourwheeling.... it was 118 degrees on the trail, conditions that will get you killed if anything at all goes wrong and you're more than a couple miles away from help. I'll never try that again. My Explorer was in perfect condition with great cooling, but running 4x4 lowrange with no airflow to help the radiator, I still kept overheating so much I had to finish the trail without running A/C and had to turn my heater on to help the engine cool - one try at cooking yourself in desert sun in a dark-blue vehicle with your heater on :o might change your plans.

What's the weather in June. I mught have to go get my AC recharged for this trip:D

Kevin, when we were there 2 years ago, the weekend before Memorial Day it was 106-109. :(
Anyone ever think about checking out the mountain trails east of Moab? You know, that white stuff we see off in the distance. ;)

Hey That sounds great.. I plan on doing some wheeling in Colorado too if possible... The trip will be mainly for mountain biking, but were taking my explorer with full intentions on doing as much wheeling as we can.

Yeah I know all about the summer heat in Moab... I go out there every august to mountain bike... no riders on the trails and no rigs.... at one point the thermometer was about to burst (or so it would seem...peeking over 120 degrees.) I'm sure if you hit the trail just before day break, the chances of survival are much higher. At least thats what we would do when embarking on a 14 mile XC loop on slickrock. I appreciate the warning though.. I know it can be crazy out there.

Luckily my explorer is white ;)

Kevin, David is right; according to my temperature gauge (which is accurate) as I recall it did hover around 100-103 or so in the middle of the day when we did a run the weekend after Memorial Day a couple of years ago. That's why earlier in the thread we agonized over doing it again this late. However I did find out that that was above averages for the first week in June, so it could be cooler this time....... or not. Fix your A/C just in case :D

According to http://www.moab-utah.com/rack/climate.html the normal max temp in Moab for June is 93 degrees (early June would be cooler), so I'm hoping for temps at least 10 degrees cooler this time. In that dry heat, 85-90 degrees isn't too bad at all. Since we had bad luck with the heat last time, maybe the law of averages will be on our side and give us a break this time :crossfingers:

David, Ashli and I tried to use both of those passes east of Moab over the LaSal mountains to get to Ouray after our wedding last year, and both were still snowed in a good 1,000 - 1,500 ft before we could reach the top - we had to turn back to Moab both times. It was still very cold up there, the views were phenominal, and the trails are very much like Colorado trails - nothing at all like Moab-type trails. If it is really hot when we are there this year, one of those passes might make a pleasant dayrun as far as you can get up; we're going two weeks later this year and maybe the trails would go further.

thanks for the help guys, I talked to silver sage today, so we shall see!
