2004 Limited V6
I have a 2004 Limited 4.0L V6. I don't know much about cars, but getting the V6 was probably the worst thing I could have done. It has hardly any power behind it. I was expecting that and thinking of gas prices at the same time, but I never thought it would have that little power. Any way I can get more hp for cheap? I'm looking for an additional 50 hp or more. I was looking at a bamachip tuner, but I have no idea where the hell I can find the 4 Digit Cal Code or Strategy, Axel Code, and engine type. Any help would be great thanks.

When you solve that magic riddle please pm me!

Intake (bigger MAF, filter, all tubing, bigger Throttle body), exhaust (From cat back, if it's a 4.0 SOHC you want 2.5in tubing from the cat back), I dunno if they make an under drive crank pully for it, then get an xcal 2 or 3. You can also change all the fluids to synth for a little gain. Horsepower costs money, even those things won't net you 50hp and you'd probably spend at least $1,000 probably more. I went through James (jah81592) for my sct Xcal2, I know he supplies under drive crank pullies for the 2nd gens as well as a lot of the other stuff I listed. His site is www.hensonperformance.com

I wouldn't blame the motor. And research would have netted the result that the mileage for the V6 and V8 is virtually the same. You're not going to get a 50HP mp on a V6 for cheap, and besides- when I had my '03 V6 it did fine- it isn't a drag car, it's an SUV. Where is the issue- what are you doing that you need 50 HP more out of it? Towing? And if it is towing, have you towed with it yet?

yeah I'm with Joe, if you wanted something both economical and fast you should have bought a small car or motorcycle. SUV's are just not designed to be fast the engines are tailored to low end torque.

Can it be made faster, sure, will it be cheap, nope...

now with that said the only cheaper things you can do are an exhaust, intake, polish the TB, remove the vains from the TB, and Set your TPS to .95v

Look at aldives quest for 30, he has some great info and research in there on mods.

Edit: Also consider looking into an underdrive pulley

It sounds like you are actually after more torque, not more power. I think the V6 is rated at around 220hp, and the V8 at 230hp, but the torque difference is around 30Nm - around 10% or so, so it's probably torque you want to increase. Intake and exhaust mods will help you achieve both actually.

Engine type etc should be on the sticker on the frame inside the drivers door. Not sure about the Cal code though - but perhaps on the build plate in the engine compartment??

I am putting an m90 supercharger on my 4.0. If you put an intake, exhaust, e-fan, gears, and programmer you will be able to spank the stock v8's pretty easy.

Hey crash and EVLSPL did you notice this guy made mention of "Less $" in the title of the thread. I doubt he is to the point of wanting turbo's and superchargers just yet. ;)

It is less than most kits on the market and many kits on the market are not offered for the 4.0 or 4.6.

trying to pull 50 extra horses out of a 4.0 is no cheap task.

I am an STS Turbo dealer so I do know what you are talking about. However, I do not believe the OP wants to spend thousands of dollars on an STS Universal turbo system. Some people are best suited by bolt-on mods. Others may prefer more extreme and expensive mods...

4.6 V8 vortec 4600
4.0 V6 procharger 4100
I have seen the universal kit for almost half that. I can not see the actual kit being much more. Thats a big differance. To me thats cheap.

I have a feeling your cheap and his(or her) cheap are in two totally different time zones :D

k&n intake, dual exhaust, chip made a huge difference on mine.
i can PULLL my friends stock 4.6 in a heartbeat.

I guess it is all about what you are used to. I have the 4.0 in mine and I am happy with its power. I have the tow package so maybe the gearing helps a bit. I had a Toyota Tundra with a V8 before the Explorer so it is not like I am used to driving weak cars.

body kit makes it go faster.

Has anyone looked into differential gear upgrades? I am contemplating this but, do not know where to start. I have looked at 4wheel parts catalog but, it looks like none of their differential gears work with 2002 EX

I have been looking at this. See what you think.

Been there and doing that for the last few years.. Check out my ride. A simple bolt on? Hardly, because of the support hardware and tuning and custom fabrication involved. But nontheless an excellent kit. I highly recommend it to anyone with the funds to support it.-j

The best bang for the buck is an underdrive pulley.

Take a look at http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1377150#post1377150

Underdrive pulley will be an excellent choice. I offer them on my website. hint, hint ;)-j

I put an intake on mine (well a cone filter installed after the maf and removed the air box). Since I did that I'm getting 2-3 mpg more. It sounds a bit better but can;t say I notice a performance increase. I noticed you have chip listed on your mods. I was told that the 2002 and up could only be re-programmed and no chip was available? Do these chips really work? Are they worth the money? thanks
