Well we have a 99 Explorer XLS with the OHV v6 with about 120k. We have been using 5w30 synthetic for our oil changes, but someone recently told my dad that using 5w20 would be better. Question is should we stick to the 5w30 or switch to 5w20? Any benefits? Thanks in advance.

The only engine that requires (in the manual) 5W-20 is the V8 one. But that was more for mandated fuel economy limits and I really thing that was the cause of almost ruining my engine. I had to switch all the way to 5W-40 to have a decent oil pressure - and this at 100k miles.
I wold not use 5W-20 in your engine, especially with that milage.

Stick to your 5-30, and live a good life...

Stay with 5W30...5W20 was spec'd for fuel economy. 5W30 will protect better.

My owners manual says 5W-30. It is 98 EB V8 5L.

My 2001 V8 5L manual says 5W-20. And, like I said, at not even 90k miles it has developed problems with the oil pressure.
But the OP has a V6 that was listed with 5W-30 always.

That's what I told my dad, why switch with this many miles now. Thanks for the quick responses guys, oil change tomorrow.

No 5W-20 on the 4.0L(ohv or sohc). It is speced at 5W-30 even until recently.

Your fine just where your at.
