I want to swap the Aviator 4.6L DOHC 32v aluminum motor into the 2007 Mountaineer.

Dead thread I know, but how has the project turned out? Has it worked, or have you hit any snags or issues that would make the swap not possible?

Not done yet. The original v6 is running strong so no NEED to do it.

The v8 is wider and the transmission is different, although both are 5r55s they use different mounts and torque converters.

Maybe one day, but right now on pause
 






I loved the Aviator when it came out, but it didn't live long and not much could be done with them except a custom KB supercharger project.

Now that the newer engines are so much better, any of the latest Ford engines are great swaps for an earlier Ford, given labor, time, budget etc. I like the 2017 F150 3.7 NA engine for my 98 Mountaineer, some day.

But for the 3rd or 4th gen Explorers, any 5.0 would be a big upgrade, though those are very expensive now due to popularity. Those you're in the 350hp+ range, far better than the DOHC 4.6 of any model. The NA V6's are good choices if they don't have the internal water pump(never buy those). If they will fit in your vehicle, the price might be under $5k total, if you use a low enough mileage engine and trans that don't need rebuilding. I'm aiming for the 2017 F150 3.7, and a 6R80 trans of 2014+, and my stock AWD TC in my 98. If it works out, the fuel mileage will not be 19/20mpg on the highway, it should be well over 25mpg.

Obv. gas is twice the price now, but where were you getting it THAT cheap then??

Ditto, it will matter what condition the engine and trans are in, how much it'll cost to use them or rebuild etc. The 2.3 is smaller than the V6's, but the turbo's are both mounted down low on each side of the oil pan and block. Fitting that will be interesting to not have to move the turbo's. I figured a 3.7 NA V6 would need at least $4k, and only if the engine is untouched, plus building the trans myself. If you have to budget much outside labor costs, it will go much higher.
 












My personal opinion (FWIW) as an owner of a Marauder:
Don't do it. The DOHC engines have nowhere near the low-end torque or HP compared to the 3v 4.6L.

If I was looking to push more out than, say a stock 3v 4.6L, I would use a 'charger.

I would stay clear of turbos for 2 reasons:
1. Under-hood temps (already a known issue leading to wiring issues at times)
2. Lack of low-end output

Dream setup would be a twin-screw Whipple w/a purpose spec'd block build.
It would last a long time, deliver reasonable economy, and the 'on-demand' would be impressive.

If $$ were not an issue I'd also throw a built 6R60 or 6R80 on it.
