Hey all, Ive got a 1997 Medium willow paint XLT. Its got a 4.0 SOHC backed by the 5 speed 5R55E tranny with auto 4x4 3.55 gears. It has 127500 exactly. Ive had it for 2 months and wouldnt trade it for anything. About 20 MPG stock. Mods in place, a crank case breather. Mods on the way, dual glass packs, some sort of air intake, not sure what and anything else i can find.ill keep you all posted as i get my mods!

1- 4.0 OHV
2- Auto
3- 3.55 or 3.73 (Its an old EB. Since it was a higher trim level, the truck -- I seem to recall -- came from the factory configured to handle towing a small boat or something. So I am leaning towards the lower 3.73 without other info. in front of me)
4- 235/75/15s ATs, "29s"
5-Uncorrected
6- 4WD
7- KKM Intake, Warn Manual Hubs, Jet Chip, Edelbrock RPM Series Muffler and custom tubing, Synthetic Fluids throughout.
8- 21 City/ 25 Hwy (Cruise set at 65mph; To determine highway mileage, we kept careful records of fuel consumption and miles travelled on a recent 500 mile round trip)

We've had this truck for 18 years and it was originally getting 16 City/19 Hwy. Today it has well over 200k on it, though the odometer seems to have malfunctioned sometime after it hit the 2 century mark. We may be approaching 250k at this point.

Things like the synthetic fluids and exhaust may have added 1-2 mpg over the years. Uncertain of Jet Chip's effect on mileage. Manual hubs -- less drag -- probably helped too but I had my mind on replacing a busted one more than on any changes in mpg.

But I'll have to say getting rid of the air box/K&N panel in favor of a KKM intake kit was probably worth 2-3mpg. The KKM was a real stand-out modification. MAF electronics coped with the intake change no problem.

Of course, we've never had this Ex on anything but stock-sized 29" AT tires. Moving up to 30s/31s ATs or MTs wouldn't do the mpg any favors. Course we could always do some 31MTs and regear!
