I have a 99 XLT with an exhaust question. I failed inspection for a muffler, so I decided to take advantage of getting a new muffler. I bought a dual input, dual output performance muffler and decided that I want to run dual pipes out of the side of my explorer infront of my back tires. I am going to mount the muffler probably a foot forward closer to the front of the car. I was just curious how much clearance I should allow between bottom trim of the car and the pipes to keep the heat from melting any paint (if that would happen). In addition, how much clearance should I allow between the pipes and the tire to keep it from affecting the tire (again, if that applies). This is my first exhaust mod and I don't wanna make a dumb mistake that hurts the cosmetics of my car body or tire, so any input would be great. Thanks guys and I look forward to hearing from you all.

There are a zillion exhaust threads in the archives which is why you're probably not getting many hits.

There are a lot of premutations and combinations you can do with exhaust. I've had my exhaust tip pretty close to the body in the past without issue. As long as it's not directly touching, you should be fine. Definitely search the archives for advice and insight. This site's been in existence for a long time and the archives are intact from Day 1.
