98 XLT
Just had a question for anyone that might have some info or maybe was thinking about doing the same thing to there X. Anyway I have a 98 explorer XLT and i have been thinking about changing out the old crappy muffler for a new flowmaster 50 series. but before i made this decision someone mentioned "why don't you just leave the muffler out and run the pipe from cat to the rear of teh car". I was told this would give my X the loud, mean sound i was looking for and wouldn't cost 150+ dollars. So anyway in conclusion i have pretty much decided since money is kinda short these days to rip out the muffler and run the 2 intake pipes out in front of both my left and right rear tires. My question is has anyone taken there mufflers off and kept them off and how difficult would it be if anyone has any experience to do this with the tail pipes on either side of the vehicle or in any position in general without a muffler.

Slide under the vehicle first and check out how things are placed - then you'll know exactly whats possible with the exhaust route.

I have a 5.0 with dual cherry bomb glasspacks, duals all the way out the back, and no H pipe. It's loud, and has a nice raspy sound when you really get on it.

you probably wouldnt want to go no mufflers, the cabin drone would be unbelieveable, especially on the highway.

If money's tight, a set of two glasspacks can be had from autozone/oreilly on the cheap ($20 bucks a piece). they will be the next loudest thing to straight pipes, and give you that "unmuffled V8" sound, but with less cabin drone.

also, they will not rust through easily, they are made of very thick steel. as the fiberglass ages however, they will become raspier and louder.

an H-Pipe can give you a smoother sounding exhaust, by helping to equilize the pressure. this is the one thing that I am considering adding
