These days, you can learn a lot about people from the ring tones they have chosen for their cellular phones. A chart-topping hit or the jingle from a popular show can be heard almost anywhere.

Replacing the standard phone ring was first popularized by tech-savvy teenagers in the late 1990s and has grown into a multibillion-dollar industry.

The newest challenger for honors on Billboard magazine's top 40 "Hot Ringtones" will soon be the Ford Mustang. Yes, the star of auto showrooms, movies, pop songs and even a U.S. postage stamp is about to add a pair of cell phone ring tones to its pop-culture portfolio. And it won't be the voice of the late Wilson Pickett, but Mustang's own distinctive throaty exhaust.

It could be a two-sided hit. One ring tone is Mustang's rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner"; the other is the growl of the Pony car running through the gears.

The download will be available for free at www.fordvehicles.com beginning Monday, January 30, along with a choice of three wallpapers: the GT convertible, the GT hardtop and the running-Pony logo.

The current Billboard ring tone chart toppers are "My Humps" by The Black Eyed Peas and Koji Kondo's "Super Mario Brothers Theme." The latter has been on the charts for 66 weeks.
