Keeps stalling out, It happens in the AM, slightly warmed up, and usually within 2 miles from home. Sound weird?? I know huh!!....But there's more!!
When it stalls, it's almost always at the same stop sign, every morning, on my way to work, even if I cruise the neighborhood a couple times before heading in the direction of THAT stop sign!!
So after it stalls it immediately starts back up, and I put it back in gear and it stalls again....This usually happens no fewer than 2 times, but is no more than 10. then I start it again, put it in reverse, it bogs a little, it moves backward, I usually go about 10-20 feet, put it in drive, and it's fine (9 times of 10) for at least until I get to work (about 8 or so miles) or if I go somewhere different, usually for the rest of the day, even after shut downs and restarts....Then the next morning, back to square 1....WTF!!
Now I know my Explorer is not psychic or is it (???same stop sign and all???)

Anywho....I am NOT extremely full with inner working mechanical knowledge.
Oil change, tune up, fuel delivery diagnostics, and suspension and steering knowledge, I have, but this issue isn't throwing any OBD codes or nothing!! So I figured it was a mechanical issue, engine/transmission. So I talked with a NEW friend of mine about my issue and he wasn't sure. So he sent me to a friend of his of 30+years who owns a automotive shop (transmission specialty)
I drive it over to him, won't stall for him....He takes it for a ride the next day, It stalls (and he's no where near my stop sign...no psychic truck I guess!) He says he knew right away what the problem is....Torque converter and shift interlock solenoid, says it's kind of big job, and gives me an estimate for $1068 I leave it with him and it's a go for Tuesday 7/29. Meanwhile I go back to our mutual friend and tell him the estimate and he says that's WAY TO HIGH for that job and that he's going to have some words with him. He told me, I sent you over to him to give him the work, not to rip you off!!

To make a long story longer!! I was wondering if there is anyone out here in Explorer forum land knows, is what was quoted me fair and is diagnosis correct??
Would really appreciate it if anyone can help me in my LONG STORY dilemma!!and can also be reached at email link providededdddogg@yahoo.com
Thanks,

May not be identical to your 4.0 SOHC, cleaning process should be similar. Do one at a time to pinpoint. Any trouble codes?

honestly doesn't sound that high to me. personally i probably wouldn't pay someone to work on my truck, but if you have to... it's a pretty big job, pull the drive shaft(s) maybe remove the transfer case if 4WD/AWD (not sure if that's necessary), disconnect the trans cooler lines, disconnect the wiring and shift cable, maybe drop the exhaust system (rusty bolts), remove the transmission, remove the torque converter, disassemble the trans, replace the solenoid and then put everything back together. and torque converter's aren't cheap. even a reman will run you $150, and he's gonna charge you more than his cost. jmho.
