My built-in Cabinet

Work has slowed down for me so that means I get to do some work around the house:D This is a built-in entertainment center I am building in my walkout, it's roughly 7'x8'x32". Hopefully get it finished by next weekend.

Here's what we were starting with, a closet with no doors...

Relieving some stress...

Removed the 2x4's. Wall is not load bearing, but I put a header board in anyway.

Test fitting the face frame before the glue dries(once is does, might as well start fresh again if you screw up:()

SAM_0507.jpg

Got the box pieces cut and laid out and then assembled with face frame on it.

IT FITS!!! It was actually a tighter fit than I planned on it being but that's fine with me:D

GF's father came over to help work on it. He sanded everything smooth while I screwed the cabinet to the wall.

Got the trim with flutes installed. I made the bottom piece the trim sits on.

Building the face frame for the bookshelves then intalled them. The last picture shows that I made the shelves short so that I can install puck lighting in the back(lights will be on top).

Got the middle shelves put in and installed the arch. The doors would be on, but I bought the wrong hinges:mad: I'll change them out tomorrow and hopefully get the doors put on.

I still need to put the crown molding on top, intstall a shelf in the bottom left side and do some more sanding. More to come as I get farther along!

Update 2: Finally got the Crown Moulding and doors installed:D Now it's fill nail holes, do some more sanding and then paint!!! I hope to have it finished by next weekend so I can start on another project.

Update 3: IT'S FINISHED!!! Everything is done except for the lighting in the back of the bookshelfs and ontop of the crown moulding which will be finished this spring. (The cord you see on the top right is lighting that's currently inside the crown moulding)

Thank you everyone for your positive comments and if you have any questions on what/how I did something or how I can help you, please ask! This was a fun project and I hope you enjoyed following along;)

Update: No lighting, but now tiling the floor instead. Hopefully we'll get it worked out if we can figure what tile we want. Here's today progress-

After-

Update: I actually have about 90% of the tile down. I have all the edges cut and laid in place, just need to put them down with thinset. Need to buy a Japense style saw to trim the bottom of the door casing so I can lay tile. This was a last second decision to install them the way we did and it turned out SWEET!!! Below is only a teaser picture, finished pictures to follow by the weekend:D

SAM_1155.jpg

Yes, it was snowing as I was cutting tile....

SAM_1158.jpg

Update: Finally have it all finished, just a few touchups and then put everything back!!! :D The tiles are different colors(same tile, but was bought from two different locations, so color was a little different) but the pictures make it seem more worse than it really is.

Lastly, the new trim that I installed:

It's MDF and pine. I was going to use Poplar because that's usually paint grade wood, but the Pine was super straight, I didn't need much so I went with that. I'll be painting it white because I want it to match the rest of the house. Thanks;)

Wow!!!

I use an electric rechargeable 15 gauge angle nailer from Senco. It's called the Airfree 41. Overall, it's pretty handy since I don't have to carry a compressor with a long air hose. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of your project. Do you have pictures of other wood working projects? It would make a nice thread if you could compile a bunch of photos, and make a photo thread. I sent a link of this thread to a friend of mine, and he loves your work. He said that he would hire you to do things around his house. Are you a carpenter by trade?

Looks awesome.

How big is the TV opening? With the price of large TVs coming down, you might want to put something BIG in there someday but those shelves on the side might limit you.

My parents got us a 32" LCD for xmas to replace our 32" Sony Trinitron. The new TV itself looks smaller but at least now I can watch football without the score display getting cutoff. It's a nice TV, but I want to replace it with something bigger- like 48" at least.

Wow. That looks really nice. Like it was there all along.

Looks great! Really like the trim as well. Adds an extra sense of style. Anything like that definitely adds the the looks of the house. Your dog looked kinda sad, almost as if it lost a hiding spot lol

fantastic job! Looks awesome!

Eric- Thanks!

I'll look into that nailer because there's times when it'd be nice not to have to carry the compressor around.

I do have a few more pictures of projects that I have done for other people. I'll start another thread soon and hopefully anyone else that has done something similar will post up too.

I am a painter/carpenter. I used to work at a cabinet shop, then started one up with a buddy and the contractor we used never paid what we charged and I couldn't work for free. I know a little bit of this and that in just about everything:D

Where does your friend live?

I have a 40" Samsung that I bought when I lived in an apartment and it was HUGE compared to the 19" I had and I only sat 6 feet away. This cabinet should hold up to a 50". I wanted to make it hold a 55", but the bookshelves would have been skinny and my GF isn't letting me buy a TV anytime soon:(

Wow. That looks really nice. Like it was there all along.

Thanks. That's kind of the idea, wanted to make it look like it came that way, or was custom built by a pro:D If somone walks in and thinks it was an amature that built it, then I have failed myself...

Thanks. My front door is trimed out similar and that's what I am copying. My dogs name is Bella, she was trying to get into every pic she could:D

DSMasten- Thank you!

Looks Great! What are you going to do for power (for when the GF gets you the 55" for your Bday ;)

I notice there is a little space left/right that is unused. Did/do you have plans for it?

If my GF was to buy me a 55" TV, I'll be asking questions....

If you are referring to the bottom left/right sides, they will have doors on them and I'll store stuff inside. The center will be left open for the PS3, surround, etc. Thanks;)

Senco has an upgraded, and more expensive nailer that doesn't require the motor to spin first to build up shooting force. Their new/improved version shoots the nails like a staple gun, but is electric, and doesn't require any disposable cartridges like the Paslode models. My friend lives a few blocks away from me, so I guess this is way too far for you. Post a link for your new thread here so that everybody could follow.

Hey, if he's willing to pay for travel to NY, I'm packing my bags:D

I'll get started on the thread in the next day or so, need to get the doors and crown molding put on the cabinet first, GF isn't to happy with todays progress(none:))

Update-

Got a saw to cut the crown moulding, cut the crown moulding and installed it, crown moulding is too short..............

Measure twice cut once? :dunno:
That built in is really cool, great job man
