I didn't have anything to do this weekend so I decided to build a console like LT.Jim. I got most of it done today, but will finish it (including wire up the switches and cover it with material) tomorrow. I don't have any progress pictures, but I guess those really aren't needed.

The top left of it is not tightend up yet, that's why that space is there.

Nice. You planning to cover it up with fabric, paint it, or leave it like that? Since I have the full console, I need to do a bit more of a retrofit. Got some ideas, but need to make a permanent bracket for my radio first, before I finish closing it in.

I'm not sure what I'm covering it in yet. I'm going to the fabric store tomorrow and see what they have that I like. Probably just some brown/tan felt or tiger print shag... :p:

I need to get a speaker for the cb too since it's now enclosed in the console. The hole on the top right is going to be a light for the switches also.

If your just going to put fabric over it I would staple some type of batting over it first. The sharp edges of the ply will rip the fabric. Either that or spend a little time with some rough (60-80 grit) sand paper and round the edges of the ply a little bit
Just my opinion
Should look real sharp in tiger print!;)

why not bar stool leather to match the console and dash?

You can sand down the wood edges to round, use a bit of foam backing, staple gun and hot glue and wrap that sucker in vinyl! Would look sharp.... nice work!

I second that!
I found grey leather fabric at the fabric store to match my interior. I forget what I payed a yard, But it was real cheap.

Yes, I'll be sanding the edges down and wrapping it with whatever I find tomorrow that I like. I don't have any leather in my truck and don't want just a leather or vynl console. I have the staple gun and razor blade out and ready to go already.

I should just paint it Ultra Flat Black... :D

how is it anchored down? does it squeek while driving?

Done.

I found a beige/tan/brownish felt at Joanne's and got a yard for $3.22. I ended up mounting the sides differently so it's easy to take apart when I wire the other switches or need to get in there for some reason. I'm pretty happy with how it came out. It really doesn't take much for me to be happy with stuff like this though. It's good enough for campin'. :D

Wow. Looks good. I want something like that but the 5speed messed that up. Ipod looks good there.

Looking smashing with that felt :D Kinda like a pimp-mobile :D

I like it! Good work! Mine is gonna be a little different since I have the full console, but right now, with the storage bins out, I can still hear the radio fine. So, when I do the final mounting, I was thinking of just using a grill of some sort over the radio (maybe with black fabric on it) so I would not have to mount an external speaker. We'll see. I like the fabric though. Nicely done!

looks really good, how much did that cost you total?

i even have enough felt left to cover my sub box too.

Thank yous ir. I'm going to try it without an external speaker first. If I need one then I'll hook one up. good luck with yours.

Buying the wood, nuts and bolts, fabric, brackets, switches and lunch for my dad and myself (twice...) it was about $40. Would have been a little cheaper but pops was hungry today. :D

Hey Colin,
Rather then me starting a new thread I'll just ask my question here. I have never owned a CB but am buying one soon. I am planning on putting it in my console (under the armrest). I was wondering about wiring some type of external speaker to it. Is this common or do I need to but a certain type of CB with outputs for that purpose?
Also my truck has a 1" x 1" speaker mounted in the interior just above the drivers side door. I am guessing this was for the stock car phone that came with the rig. Could I use that for my external speaker? Any help would be great. I know nothing about CB's
Thanks

I'm not exactly sure and maybe rizz can help better, but mine has an output in the back for a PA and external speaker. If yours doesn't, you might be able to take it apart and splice into the internal speaker wires and connect to an external. Again, I'm not 100% on that though.
