My little doggie, Pepper, passed away today from heart failure. My father said he went to sleep this afternoon and never woke up. He was a great dog, and a happy dog.

I'd like to say thanks to Matt for this poem he posted a while ago. It makes it a little easier.

Rainbow bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals that had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I'm sorry to hear that. I posted this a while back...:(

I wrote this a while ago dedicated to my first dog. Then many people thought it was really good, so I thought I would share it. Sara was a Samoyed and a very loyal dog, unfortunately she got a rare bladder infection a while back.

Friends Forever
Dedicated to Sara (1986-2000)

As the stars shine through the glass,
Thoughts I have come by and pass.
Thoughts of places I have fret.
Thoughts of people I have met.

As the moon is glowing bright,
In wee hours of the night,
Shadows lurk upon the walls,
Down into the darkened halls.

What I see can only be
Cats I chase around with glee.
Knowing this I’ll go to sleep
Trying not to make a peep.

Looking at my friend tonight,
Dreaming of our fun in light,
Thinking of what times we’ve had,
Gives me joy, which makes me glad.

I will do this till the end.
That’s why I’m called man’s best friend.

Aww man. I am SOO sorry to hear that. I know the words that we utter in this post, in no way make up for the loss, but I want to offer my sincerest sympathy, and wish a quick recovery for you, and your family. A pet is just like a memeber of the family.

On a side note, this really got to me, as my family has a Palm that looks EXACTLY like yours. Im not sure what they would do if/when anything happens to him.

I agree with Rick. Having a pet in the family as long as you did it's just like losing a member of the family.

Since I've lived here in Missouri (4 1/2 years) I've lost 3 pets. One was a cat we named Paws, he was an outside pet and he just disappeared. The other two were dogs....

One named Pepper (which is why I am reading this thread) and one named Buster.

Pepper was a mixed dog...one of the smartest dog's we've ever owned. She kept jumping over the 5' tall fence around her dog house so my dad put her on a chain so she couldn't jump up that high and keep getting out. Well I guess the chain was too long so she made it over the fence late at night and she hung herself. And it's really sad but the other dog Buster died the same way.

The pets mentioned above are family pets. I have my own 2 dogs that are both cockerspaniels. One of them almost past from loss of blood from all the fleas just this past summer. I hope I don't have to go through this stuff with them for a long time.

I am so sorry to hear that

My dog( a yellow lab) is up there in years now and I can't imagine what you could be going through.....she is a member of our family....I had another dog (a black and tan coonhound) that was hit by a car.....I was grieving for months....he was only 3 years old so we hadn't had him for as long as this one (she's 13).

A lot of people have said a lot of wonderful things, nothing that any of us say will take the pain away, but hopefully you'll find some comfort knowing that others have gone through it before you, some are going through it with you, and some, like me are dreading the day. It always brings a tear to my eye (okay fine I start bawling) when I read these threads. It makes me think of our two dogs and how much we love them. We don't have children yet and these two definatly get treated like our kids, we spoil the hell out of them. Even when we leave town MattAdams does me a huge favor and comes over here to stay with them for a week or two (however long we're gone), one so they don't have to go to the kennel, and two because they just love Matt... Lacy (my little black mutt) insists on sleeping UNDER the covers with us, and Guiness (Tara's runt that looks like a rottie) insists on sleeping between us. We wouldn't have it any other way now either...

Sorry to babble about my dogs, I'm not trying to detract from your grief, but hopefully let you smile knowing that others love their dogs as much as you love Pepper... RIP...

Very sorry to hear of your loss. My Rottie "Ella" died about two years ago (bloat) and I still miss her. With time things get a bit easier and you'll always have your memories.

Take care...

Doc,
I am SO SORRY for your loss!! I am glad he went in his sleep. I have been there when the "shot" was put in, extremely sad feeling. Going during sleep is the best way.

Best to you and your family for your loss..............

Thank everyone. I actually do feel a little better after reading your posts. It makes me feel good to see there are other that love their dogs like a member of the family.

We are all doing much better today. He lived a long and happy life, and I have no regrets that he missed out in any way. He died happy, which is what's important to me. Once again, thanks. Hearing from you all does make it easier.

I'm very sad now. I'm glad to know that he had a good life. All dogs really need is love from their owners, and it sounds like Pepper had that his whole life.

Here's to the never ending rawhide that Pepper's playing with now.

Doc, hang tough. We've all lost loved ones and we're with you.

Julie and I want to rescue a dog when we get a house and are out of the condo. I have a hard time thinking about them when everyone else goes to breeders. My choice, but some of the best dogs are adopted and need so much love.
