Ok...recently i have been getting a lot of emails in my email account that have the subject "Returned Mail: User Unknown". Well obviously somehow someone stuck my email address in the "From" area of these Spam emails and everytime they are sending it to someone that doesn't exist, I get that back. It's for some weight loss program, and I went to the site and there is no way to contact them, only a way to order their product online. What the hell can I do???

This sound very like a virus that has attacked your address book and is sending out spam from your machine. Or someone is bouncing mail through your mailbox and hence the sender name gets changed to your own. Need to know a bit more about what you use for email. ie outlook, outlook express or hotmail etc. Check your machine for viruses.

As this is an online service you will have to contact yahoo and see if they can sort it for you. They may want some sample messages to find out where it is comming from.

Subject: Eat pizza, watch TV ... and lose 22 pounds!

Plain Text Attachment [ Save to my Yahoo! Briefcase | Download File ]

: )))

If you're like me, you've tried EVERYTHING to lose
weight. I know how you feel - the special diets,
miracle pills, and fancy exercise equipment never helped
me lose a pound either. It seemed like the harder I tried,
the bigger I got, until I heard about a product called
Power Diet Plus.

You're probably thinking to yourself, "Oh geez, not another
miracle diet pill!" Like you, I was skeptical at first, but
my sister swore it helped her lose 23 pounds in just two weeks,
so I told her I'd give it a shot. I mean, there was nothing
to lose except a lot of weight! Let me tell you, it was
the best decision I've ever made. Period. Six months later,
as I'm writing this message to you, I've gone from 355 pounds
to 210 pounds, and I haven't changed my exercise routine or diet
at all. Yes, I still eat pizza, and lots of it!

I was so happy with the results that I contacted the manufacturer
and got permission to resell it - at a BIG discount. I want
to help other people lose weight like I did, because it
does so much for your self-esteem, not to mention your health.
I give you my personal pledge that Power Diet Plus
absolutely WILL WORK FOR YOU. If it doesn't, you can return it
any time for a full refund.

If you are frustrated with trying other products, not having
any success, and just not getting the results you were promised,
then I recommend the only product that worked for me - POWER DIET
PLUS.

You're probably asking yourself, "Ok, so how does this stuff
actually work?"

Power Diet Plus contains Lipotropic fat burners which are
scientifically proven to increase metabolism and cause rapid
weight loss. No "hocus pocus" in these pills - just RESULTS, RESULTS,
RESULTS!!

Here is the bottom line ...

I can help you lose 10-15 pounds per week naturally, without
exercising and without having to eat rice cakes all day.
Just try it for one month - there's nothing to lose, and everything
to gain. You will lose weight fast - GUARANTEED. That is my
pledge to you.

Ok so nothing on your machine would be influencing this. Send an email to abuse@yahoo.com or postmaster@yahoo.com and explain what is happening. Then take it from there. They may have a problem that they are aware of and are trying to track down.

Obviously something odd is going on. There probably is nothing that you can do directly. I would still run a full virus scan on your machine though. Also get a copy of adaware and run that to see if you have a cookie that is causing it.

Somebody has "spoofed" your email address. I've had it happen to my Yahoo and Hotmail accounts before. Your email account hasn't been compromised (as far as someone getting into it, and viewing your email), but your email address was used as a "From address" by a spammer. There was a good article on spam in the January 2003 issue of MaximumPC that explained, among other things, how to decode the header of an email to determine its real source. There's an FAQ here mentioned in the article that explains more than you may ever want to know about tracing and tracking mail abusers.

Thanks Doug...Hopefully Yahoo will be able to resolve this. I really don't know what else I can do at this point.

Well lets hope that Yahoo can do something. As has been said there is not a lot you can do directly. Just relax that it is not you who is sending the mail. All the best.

this sucks...they sent me back the obvious "someone is forging the your email address" but also stated the following....

"We take the operation of Yahoo! Mail very seriously. Unfortunately,
Yahoo! cannot technically prevent its domain from being forged in the
headers of an email message and it's not possible to preempt the misuse
of the Yahoo! name in forged headers. Individuals are strongly
discouraged from forging the Yahoo! domain in the future and appopriate
action will be taken as necessary.

If you are receiving multiple failure delivery messages and would like
to direct them out of your Inbox, you may want to utilize our filter
feature to do so. Filters automatically sort your incoming messages
into
the folders of your choice, according to rules that you set up. The
benefit of filters is that you don't need to read through each message
to decide where it goes. For example, you could create a filter so that
messages from your family members are automatically delivered to a
personal folder called "Family."

Great...use a filter.....ARGGHHH how annoying.

If someone that knows you has a virus on their system (klez for example) it can take random addressres from their address book and use those in the to: and the from: line.

A from: line can be forged, but more and more mail servers aren't accepting mail from servers if the from: and the sending domain don't match.

It's no big deal really. When spammers send email out they can just as easily make the "from" say your name as the "to" part. It's just another method to bypass peoples anti-spam measures.

Block it and that's all you can do.

....unless you send yourself emails. :D
