i just got through installing a homemade induction kit with an exposed cone-shaped air filter, for less than $40!!!

Bought this conduit hanger from home depot, for 5.97, with a flat end to match up to the MAS, and a round end to connect to this universal cone air filter i bought for 24.99. I got a sheet of tin and fabricated it to make a piece that allows the conduit hanger to screw right onto the MAS. i found a little bit of cork sheeting to make some gaskets, and plugged up the vacuum that runs to the throttle body or manifold (not the one that goes to the factory intake tube--thats gone).

i am really stoked that i did it for less than $40, in less than an hour, BUT....

my truck runs like feces.

-does the computer really notice and tell the engine to mix more gas?

-how long does it take to run right or better or whatever?

ALSO:

if anyone wants more details about my setup, let me know...

help!

dude, you might not want pictures.

i think that i messed up my truck really bad.

the computer has not reset itself yet. i have put like 60 miles on it since i did the mod, and still nothing.

it runs like a racing piss horse
it bogs down from 1000 to 3500 rpm, idles like a dragster, and there is a clinking sound coming from the catalytic converter or muffler.

i unhooked the battery all night last night, and i sprayed gumout carb and choke cleaner all over the mass airflow sensor.

i have no idea what to do.

perhaps my MAS is shot

somebody help!!

Well i am curious what it looks like too, and do you have everything on 1 receipt cause i was gonna try it also, i was in home depot looking at some stuff.

Does the air filter happen to be an APC filter from like Pepboys or something of the like? I tried something similiar to what you did with the APC filter and I had some weird things happen too. I eventually just bought a KKM kit and I have had no problems. Maybe it was a fluke thing with the filter, but it works now. (Also I read somewhere shortly after I changed it to KKM that APC stood for Another Piece of Crap.:D ) Another thing, I did not notice any gain in throttle response with the APC.

ummm... how about putting the vaccuum line back? Believe it or not, most of that stuff serves a purpose...

removing the vaccumm line that runs from your intake tube could cause it to run funny.

in response:

1. yes, APC is the brand of filter.

2. the instructions for installation of the kkm kit state to use the provided aluminum stud to plug the vacuum line that runs to the manifold. i was curious about that too.

i am trying to hook it back up stock, to see if it will go back to normal.

I don't see why the filter brand would affect the engine that way. It may not provide good flow, or might not filter well... but unless there is noticable damage, i don't think you'd notice it that much. Leave your filter on, hook that vacum line back up to your intake tube, unhook the negative cable for a few minutes... then try again and see if its better. thats what i'd do anyways.

alright, here's what i did.....

i put the stock box back, and it was fine.

i drilled my airbox and cleaned the MAS. it runs better than ever before. nice sound also.

i am considering hooking the APC back up, perhaps now that the MAS is clean, it will read right, and work right.

i think thats what i am going to do.

i'll post again after its done.

Well i have been searching through this site for maybe 6 months and never got around to joining. I read this post you had and nobody else seemed to hit on what i would tell you, so i just registered and this is my first post

I recently did a home made intake also. I went out and bought probably the very same filter you picked up. I had the same problems you described.

I hate to tell ya this but get a 3.5" k&N instead of the 3" APC. I guess it doesn't have to be K&N if you can find a 3.5" by someone else. Your engine is starving for air. it just needs a little more. If i am not mistaken you have a 1st gen, so i would expect it to work a bit like mine (it was at the top and i don't remember how old your X was)

Anyway. You are causing a bottle-neck (constriction) of the air flow. I ran a 3.5" K&N through a peice of PVC elbow and jerry rigged a way to attach it. I am gonna re-work it a bit this summer when i can get into the garage but it has been working just fine for about a month now.

the point is you need a biger hole for the air to flow through. Make sure it is nice and air tight when you bolt it together (check it after you install it, mine lossened up a bit from the heat in the engine compartment after a good 30 mile drive) it also can't hurt to throw a little heat sheilding on your attachment too if you can fit it in there.

good luck with you adventure. And thanks to everyone for the info i have been scalping off here
