My quest for 30 MPG - Ford Explorer Gas Mileage Tips

My ititial suggestions would be:

(1) swap that semi-synthetic oil for the real deal - full synthetic
(2) swap all other fluids to full synthetic
(3) by all means get a tune from Doug ( Nama Chips )

Good luck ....

Other things you might want to do are:

(1) increase tire pressure
(2) remove roof rack
(3) cat back exhaust upgrade
(4) underdrive pulley(s)

how much better do you want to get than 20 to 21.

my 2002 i am lucky to get around 14 to 15.

20 to 21 is okay for highway speeds. In the city, I'm getting around 11. I think you mileage depends a LOT on your style of driving. If you like to hear the engine rev whenever you take off from a stoplight, you are going to burn gas.

Update, I am the guy a few postings back with 20" wheels and 21-24 MPG.

I have 275/45/20 tires and they are at 38-40 PSI.

How do I go about getting a BAMA CHIP. what do I ask for? Where do I find underdrive pulleys? Where is the cheapest place to buy AMsoil oil and trans fluid etc?

These figures where conducted using NO AC, and occassionally having the rear windows cracked a bit.

Also ALDIVE, does your cat back sound all loud? I do not want a loud exhaust at all.

I got mine from Doug.

PM me, I can help you with that.

Not at all; only hear it when stomping on it. Thats why I went with a Flowmaster 70 muffler.

you can get 40+ £for£ acquivalent

I live in the UK and my 4lit explorer is coverted to run on Lpg. I get about 30 mpg around town and 45 on a long run £ for £ acquivalent.I always use synthetic oil and changed my spark pluges for high pro platum .they were expencive but increast mpg and power.also i check my tyers every week [16x70x265]set at 35psi. I dont know if UK explorers are set up any different to US ones but the over drive on my gear boxs makes a huge difference

Off on a 2000 mile trip to Atlanta, SC, and NC.

Gonna be trying out several tunes and other things for mileage.

Data in about a week.

I have a 97 with the dual in single out muffler. Is yours the same? If so, what is the part # for the Flowmaster 70 you are running? Is it the SUV model? Thanks.

Mine is single in/single out ( 2 1/2" ).

Sorry, I have no clue as to the part number.

Custom adjustment of front end alignment.
Al, just curious as to what changes were made in the alignment.....?
I assume 0 toe setting, and extra negative camber...?

Congratulations, you have taken fuel mileage to another level.

I am keeping the data to myself untill I am satisified of its value.

Aldive, Sent you a PM regarding AMSOIL Purchase. Also, Trying to get a shop to drain the Transmission and fill with Synthetic is like pulling teeth. I know it will help my gas mileage, and transmission longevity. No one wants to clear out their system and use a better fluid? Any suggestions? I only really called the Chain stores, so maybe I should keep trying...Definetely want the Amsoil in the PM. Can you send me an Invoice for the items? Should be up to 24 MPG solid after all fluids are exchanged...(estimate only). Right now I am still at 21-24mpg

just drop the pan, change the filter and fill her up yourself. its not that bad

add an aftermarket cooler too, that will do more than anything as for as longevity goes for your trans...
