definatly sounds belt related, the ranger used to do it, try starting it and hitting the belt with some WD40 and kill it and try again, if it goes away, the easiest thing to do is to get a tube of dilletric grease and rub some on the top and bottom of the belt, it will solve the noise for a few months and you can re-lube it. mine turned out to be a tensioner and i didnt bother replacing it because it always started after a high-water crossing..
hope i helped

What I would do is remove the serpentine belt, and let it set overnight to cool well, then start the engine and "hopefully" not hear the noise.

If you do still hear the noise, you have eliminated the accessories and need to look into the engine timing chain tensioner.

There "may " be an oil drain back issue also, a new, good oil filter might help.

I've moved this thread to the "modified 1995-2001" sub forum , for more views and responses.

Thanks for the replies.

I thought about removing the belt, but just haven't. And now the truck is over at the welder for the next couple days getting a new bumper made. But I will check it when I can.

The oil filter- I use a Wix filter. But it has been awhile since it's been changed. Need to do that soon too.

Hopefully it's not timing related...... The noise certainly seems to come from the front- and possibly the front driver's side, which leads me to think it's the power steering pump. Also when cold, the steering can feel kind of "heavy".

with the belt on check for slack in it, could be the belt tensioner. also if you take the belt is off free spin the pulleys and make sure they move freely ie. no binding, roughness or humming

Check your fan clutch too.

if the A/C is turned on, the fan will be on.

Yes the fan will be on with the first start up. I know its not the fan as mine does the same thing and I have an e fan conversion. At one point I had replaced both the idler pully and the tensioner and it was gone for a week or so and now its back. I'm not too worried as it starts every time and the noise is gone with in a few seconds ( famous last words)

Mine does the exact same thing. It is the alternator on mine. I'm milking this out for funding issues, but that is what mine does. Same exact squeal, only on cold starts. Car runs fine. If you take your belt off and spin the alternator pulley with your hand, it should squeak pretty softly, but it is there. stick your ear up to it. If not, start car without belt and listen and do a process of elimination from there.

edit: good idea to just invest in a good belt and tensioner pulley at this time as well. Mine wasn't spinning smoothly.

Mine has been like this for 3 months and I have had no issues *crosses fingers*. I can't guarantee you the same time frame, but just letting you know I been milking it and had no change in noise or electrical performance at all after it started. (and I leave an illuminated 3 way lighter socket splitter with 2 usb power ports which I never unplug)

So the fan spins freely when cold- it's stiff but it turns. It stops as soon as I let it go- no matter how hard I turn the fan. "Filled with mashed potatoes" is a good analogy.

Start the engine and the fan appears to spin as fast as the engine. I let it run for a couple minutes and stuck a piece of cardboard into the blades- the fan eventually comes to a stop. Release the cardboard and the fan resumes speed.

I think I'm going to try removing the fan/clutch and starting the engine. And if I also remove the belt, this will eliminate everything not driven by the crankshaft/timing chain.

Did you repalce the starter or just mend it?
