need advice plz

Have a 2004 explorer that sometimes engages into 4wheel high without a light, and then it disengages whenever it sees fit, I am mechanically inclined and feel I can fix it but I am not very familiar with these push button 4 wheel drive systems. Can't afford to take to shop without putting a cramp on families finances, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

In 4 Auto it will engage when it thinks necessary (without a light) and then disengage once the coast is clear. It engages based on input from wheel and/or drive shaft speed sensors. It engages when it sees a wheel slipping. This is why tires have to all be same size and condition as not to trigger falsely.

Actually its the bw4411. Willish, did you happen to replace 1 or 2 tires lately?
