I have found the "brake caliper bracket mounting bolts" but those appear to be the ones that hold the brake pads assembly. I need the bigger bolt that hold the whole brake assembly on. Where would one find this? Is this OEM?

I am writing this is as I sit on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck!

Either junkyard (not sure if regular 2nd gen Explorers are the same) or dealership.

You might want to consider some loc tite also.

You're lucky you caught it before both fell out -

I had both fall out on mine - and the caliper assembly was like a merry go round on my rotor.

I was lucky that it didn't puncture the inside of my wheel.

Technically these bolts should be replaced once removed and if you re use don't just consider locktite- apply it. New bolts are already coated with locktite.

Check out my thread on my complete front brakes

Edit: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=417536 the last post list part numbers of everything I replaced.

I also thought torque was more than 80 even. I'll have to check my iPad in a few for the service manuals I saved. Ok it was close at 83 ft lbs

Do you guys think it would be beneficial to sticky this link to the sport trac sub forum also, instead of just in the 2nd gen forum?

Absolutely - seems to plague us all :)

I Agree!!!

I have new bolts in hand, about to go fix it... I did not suffer any damage other than a very shallow gouge on the inside of my wheel...

Mine had the same - a gouge around the entire inside of the wheel -

HEre's what could have happened:

Damn, that would be scary.

Skid- remember 83 ft/lbs. I haven't used a torque wrench up until this year so I actually double check every bolt a second time and if you forget if you did torque a bolt down- do it again to verify.

Turdle- that's actually the sub forum I read it. I don't go over there often but do because there are similarities BUT i didn't know this till I started regularly coming to the forum- starting out I never checked the 2nd gen explorer section.

I torqued them to 85lbs, I'm now up and running(Replaced bolts on both sides), will check them every time I change oil, lube, etc... Thanks!

I don't think it would be necessary to check every time at an oil change. Maybe a good idea to check it after so many miles, kind of how they recommend to check your lug nuts/wheels or body mounts when removed/replaced

I meant to add I would check at least next few during the next few oil changes, maybe not every one from now on...
