I have a 2014 explorer. It has no codes showing or check engine light on. When I am accelerating my rpm jump and the car feels like it has a miss/hesitation. We have replaced the spark plugs, throttle body and the pedal tps. Driving in town at lower speeds causes it to do it the whole time and even feels like theres no power or like it wants to stall at times. I have taken it to a garage. They guy thought it was was a miss. When he hooked up his computer it didn't show one. It had a code p1501. But basically they couldn't figure it out at the time. They are going to keep it for for longer to try to figure it out. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem or has any idea what it could be. I also had it in to the Ford dealership getting a recall fixed and they told me they couldn't duplicate the issue I was explaining which is weird because it does it every time I drive it.

Code P1501 is for the vehicle speed sensor. Did they say anything about replacing it to see if that fixed the problem? If the shop can't duplicate the problem you can offer to take it for a test drive(you drive) and see if you can make it happen. If the tech is in a hurry he/she might not take the time to test drive it enough.

That's what we found but there are like 5 different speed sensors on it. We are thinking it's the one for the transmission but then there is upstream and down stream.

This vehicle does not have a "vehicle speed sensor", per se. The onboard electronics assemble the data for VSS from the ABS system and the TCM (Transmission Control Module).

Since only one fault code is known, have to go with that for now. P1501 indicates that the PCM received VSS data that was "out of self test range". That is, the data is out of the expected values for operation based on other data. Problems could range from a faulty sensor in either of the contributing sub-systems, a faulty wiring or connection concern, or even electrical noise from, perhaps, a "noisy" cell phone charger or other electronic device.

The two additional sub-systems need to be scanned to see if they are posting any fault codes. That will help to focus diagnostic efforts in a likely more productive direction.

If the ABS system was scanned for codes, would the P1501 show up there or would there be a specific code for the speed sensor? Same question for the transmission.

I've never needed to check either one on any of my vehicles.

I found this. It doesn't give a specific year/model but seems to indicate the PCM or ABS modules are possible.

Ford DTC P1501

Make:FordCode1501Definition:Vehicle Speed Sensor Out Of Self Test Range Description: This DTC sets when the PCM detected an error in the vehicle speed information. Cause:
  • Damaged ABS module
  • Damaged PCM
Diagnosis: Monitor the VSS (SPD) PID while driving the vehicle. Component: VSS

Recommend sticking with Ford's technical and service documentation instead of whatever a google search pulls up.
