95 xlt 4dr
took the x out last night i was DD
its a 95 explorer 4 dr 4.0 auto.
170,000
just changed the filter and fluid in the pana month ago( 1000 miles maybe less)
left toll booth at 2 am and it decided it didnt want to find second.
same happeneed when i got off expressway.
heres the deal. it takes off fine but acts like you have the shift lever in 1st.
the only way to get into to go into the next gear is to let off after speeding up and then it will jump into drive.
it does not go into 2nd and slip it doesnt go into second at all. no funny noises either. so it sounds like its not toasted clutch packs or anything.
so now i need imput.

What model trans is this?
how much is a rebuilt one?( recommended places?)
is there someone selling new ones out there reseanoble?
should i junk the truck? it has 170,000 and rocker rusted out good truck overall inside out.
should i have the local mech who i have dealt with alot throw in a junkyard trans and sell it?
or is there any easy fixes to this?
im thinking if its going to cost 1000 it might not be worth it.
checking kbb to find out values after i type this.
advice appreciated.

KBBsays
2000.00 trade in value
3300.00 private party price
say 2000.00 quick sale figure.
so if the trans cost me 1000.00
i would be ok if i got 1000.00 for the truck the way it is. junkyard, selling it outright, whatever... eitherway not looking so good...
unless there is a cheap fix.

It's sounding like a broken intermediate band in a 4R44E.

i was thinking it would be solenoid or valve body related since it doesnt try to shift into 2nd. it just holds in first until i let off the throttle enough for drive to engage.. going to try and get someone at the ford dealer to look at it after hours tomarrow well see.
