Hi guys! So I'm having a problem with my Parking Brake. I can push the parking brake pedal all the way to the floor, but nothing grabs at all. I had my dad watch near the rear left wheel to see if the cable moves at all, and it did, so I don't think the cable is seized. Could it just need adjusting? Or do I need new parking brake shoes/pads (whatever it takes). Can anyone help me? :(

And how much do you think it would run me to have someone fix it?

the lathing mechanism is at the pedal. theres a spring loaded arm with teeth on it that grabs if u take off the kick panel u will see what im talkin bout. either the spring broke or its seized. u could spray it with pb blaster and work it with a screwdriver to free it up

I'm not sure if the problem would be there. When I press the pedal down, my dad could see the line moving near the back left wheel (the gap between the wheel and running board). Would the spring that you're talking about still help me?

i misunderstood what u were asking i think. i thought u were sayin the pedal wont stay down. u could try to adjust your rear brakes. on the back side under the axle theres a rubber stopper pry it out and shine your light in there. ushould se a little gear looking thing take a? small screwdriver and turn the gear downward u might need a long slender one too to hold the adjusting arm off the gear. if its still hard to tyurn take you drum off. then u can inspect your shoes. u will probably have to take the adjusters out and lube them with some antiseize. actually u should probably do this in the first place cuz they should be self adjusting. i shoulda asked do u have rear disc brakes. there might also be an adjuster in the cable u could try that too just be sure to do it with the brake on e brake on and stop when the wheels are locked. if u have rear disc brakes i dont know much about them ive never worked on one on a ford. ive never even looked at one. i do know it operates insid the disc and has separate shoes. sorry im so all over the place im pretty tired

Haha thanks for the info. Yeah I'm pretty tired myself. My explorer has rear disc brakes, so I'll probably go out tomorrow morning and inspect the cable. If it's the cable needing adjusting, should I see slack in the cable?

Your vehicle has a combination disk/drum brakes in the rear. The service brake uses the disk, and the parking brake is traditional drum. A single rotor/drum serves both. The parking brake shoe clerance is adjustable like
pickupman said. However, in your situation, with no engagement at all, I would suspect totally worn shoes or damage to other components of the parking brake system. You can see what's going on there by removing the calipers and the combined rotor/drum. Unfortunately, any repair will require disengaging the shafts from the differential and pulling them out, to gain access.
It goes without saying that working on brakes requires the proper knowledge and tools. Please don't work on your brakes if you don't possess both.
